This is sort of a stange question, but is there an original robinhood story everyone can point to? My intro to it was probably the Disney movie.

Short answer? No. Long answer?

There's iconic portrayals of the character, but there's no "original work", and many of the earliest that still exist bear little resemblance to what we think of as "Robin Hood".

For a majority of people it's either Disney's Fox or Errol Flynn. Those two have been the definitive versions of Robin Hood for eighty years in the case of Flynn and fifty for Disney. The Third most popular? Men in Tights.

There's been other's of course, Kevin Costner's Prince of Thieves got a bit of traction and there was a UK TV show that was alright. But basically those three have it sewn up, the live action adult Robin Hood, the kid's cartoon, and the silly lampoon. No new Robin Hood has been able to break in and tread ground that's not already well-worn for some time.

For me it was Kevin Cosnter with Prince of Thieves followed by the Diseny Cartoons.

I think that like the Three Musketeers that redoing Robinhood is hard. Everyone knows the story and any movie has to stand up to the past ones. You don't need to reinvent the wheel but remember the core of the story and have decent actors something the 2018 version forget.
