'I knew it was likely to happen sooner or later', I thought as I rolled through the gates of Ashford Academy, full pizza tray on the back of my new scooter and a wary eye on the students around me.

I thought Zero was prepping for the attack on Narita, but it was also a school day and I wasn't sure if Lelouch was skipping school or working from home today. And the pizza was addressed to the clubhouse, so I knew I couldn't avoid some potentially hazardous contact.

As I walked up the front steps, I didn't hear anything loud, but it look like someone was making tea in the kitchen.

I knocked, and tensed as the Witch herself answered the door. She was in a long shirt, and a pair of slacks, and looked utterly board

"Howdy Ma'am, here's your pizzas; 1 pepperoni and mushroom, 1 chicken and wasabi, 1 sashime and onion, and 1 Supreme Sampler." Offering the boxes to her with the bill on top.

CC began sniffing the boxes as she dug out a credit card, likely Lelouch's, and forked it over for me to stick in the mobile reader.

"Would you like a receipt, miss?" I asked as the transaction went through.

"No thanks, he's given up this card completely." She says with a nonchalantly as she turned to take the boxes inside.

Watching her walk inside, I couldn't help but snark under my breath after she closed the door "I'm sure he has, Pizza-butt, I sure he has."

As I started to pull away, I noticed Rivalz and Lelouch coming up the driveway in Rivalz motorcycle. They were chatting as Lelouch read something on his phone, so I schooled my face so that I would look tired and bored. Hopefully Lelouch wouldn't think too hard about my presence, and if he recognized me he'd write it off as me doing my day job.

As we passed each other, it seemed Lelouch didn't take overt notice, though I wasn't stupid enough to think he hadn't registered and recognized me. Of course, I also knew of his paranoia regarding Nunnally and his safety, so I suspected he may start telling CC to order from a different location to keep me away from Ashford.

That, or he may attempt to Geass me to ignore any oddities on the Ashford campus; you could never know for sure with Lelouch.

My musings were interrupted when I heard a voice call out "Lulu, were you out gambling again, I thought you'd given that up!"

Turning to look over my shoulder, I spied a young woman with auburn-orange hair walking up to the motorcycle that Rivalz had just parked.

'Well, if it isn't Ms Fennette herself; hopefully I can save you and your dad. That reminds me, I need to speak with Zero about that whole mud volcano plan; something tells me geology and hydrology wasn't high up on the list of topics Lelouch has been educated in.'

"If you want to save lives and expose the lies surrounding the Ares Villa Incident and the Invasion of Japan, I need you to ask Cornelia to allow your guards and security to start discretely evacuating civilians from Narita before she moves on the JLF. If there are not enough personal in your security detail, ask the Special Detachment for assistance, or use the rearguard elements. Do not ask how I know about your sister's operation or the Special Detachment; suffice to say Zero's intel network is very extensive and your sister is not as sneaky as she believe herself to be. I will be in the area of Narita to verify that the civilians have been evac'd. If I see that you have been able to accomplish this, once the dust settles between your sister and the JLF, I will give you the further information. Good day, Princess."

This was the text I had sent to Euphie on the sat phone, shortly before entering the hanger where the BK's were keeping our new Knightmare's, including Kallen's future ride.

I knew that the time had come for me to warn Lelouch about the costs of enacting a strategy using new equipment and incomplete knowledge, hoping he would at least take a second look at his 'mud volcano' plan, and revise his plan to reduce the chance of devastating a town that could be full of civilians.

"Zero, may I speak with you for a moment?" I asked after Lelouch told us the Black Knights were going on a 'camping trip' to Narita.

"What is the issue Eugene?" Zero said as he approached me.

"Narita is full of Brit civilians, how do you plan to ensure their safety in whatever plan you are cooking up?" I asked plainly.

"They should be far from any harm, if I anticipate Cornelia's actions and the JLF's response correctly. We are Knights of Justice, and I will not put innocents in harms way unless there is no other choice. I will say, it is refreshing for someone to take active interest in the welfare of civilians in a potential conflict zone." Lelouch responded.

"Zero, with all due respect, no plan survives contact with the enemy. We are also going to be utilizing new equipment that we haven't have a chance to test yet, as I doubt you'll have us out there without our Knightmare's. All I want is for you to allow me to give an anonymous warning to the local cops in Narita before we initiate any operations." I said, looking at his mask and imagining I could see he purple eyes behind it.

Lelouch was quiet for a minute, and I started feeling a sinking pit in my stomach. Finally, when I was starting to worry I had fucked up by approaching him like this, Lelouch spoke.

"I respect your commitment to protecting innocents, but I cannot risk giving away our plans or position. Though, sense you are concerned about these civilians, and not a front-line fighter, I am going to be giving you a different assignment than I was planning. I want you to get into Narita, and report on any movement of troops, Britannian or JLF. I will allow you to warn the local authorities only after I am sure doing so will not endanger our primary task." Lelouch said, justifying that sinking pit in my stomach.

"You want me to act as an advanced scout in Narita itself?" I asked, trying to hide my dread at being stuck in Narita during the battle; getting entombed in a man-made lahar and suffocating to death like Shirley's dad was not a fun way to die.

"Yes, exactly. It will put you in a position to more accurately report troop numbers and locations, as well as alert local authorities that they should begin an evacuation once the fighting begins. I was initially going to have you assist the scouting units in mapping exfil routes, but your passion for protecting civilians has persuaded me that you are more useful in Narita proper. Is there anything else, Eugene?" Lelouch asked, clearly feeling he'd made his wishes known.

"Just one thing; what excuse do you want me to give my job as to why I'm going to be unavailable for several days? That job gives us a lot of leeway in where I can gain access to without arousing suspicion, I don't think it would be smart for me to quit or get fired for being sick/out too often." I asked, causing Zero to pause for a second.

"Tell them you need a couple weeks off due to a case of pneumonia. I'll ensure you manager does not question your illness and medical records will back you up. Will you trust me with that?" Zero replied.

"Of course Zero, thank you for hearing me out and addressing my concerns. I'll begin prepping for our 'camping trip ASAP'." I said with a salute. Lelouch nodded and exited the warehouse; it sounded like he was going to Geass the manager at my Pizza Hut, which didn't bother me much.

However, I still had a bad feeling about this mission, even after all the precautions I'd taken to address issues via both avenues I had. Now, I was going to be in the danger zone. I had to hope that Euphie would come through on the evac, and that I could get out of the town fast enough to avoid the lahar once everything started.

"Eugene, what was that about?" Kallen asked, having seen me and Zero talking.

"Just some concerns about civies potentially in the line of fire. Zero gave me a new assignment to help ensure we get innocents to safety and have up to date information on Brit positions." I said, not wanting to get into the details with Kallen. I needed her focused on this mission.

If my message to Euphie could keep the Lancelot from taking the field, or at least delay it, Lelouch may be able to capture Cornelia. Lelouch capturing her would massively simply my plans, but I couldn't depend on it. Too many things could go sideways now, and I had to anticipate Cornelia escaping the fight like in OTL.

"Well, I guess that fits with Zero's 'Knights of Justice' speech. I still cannot believe Zero gave me the Guren, or that he thinks I'm our best pilot." Kallen said, clearly still coming to grips with the power Zero had put in her hands.

"Pffft, Kallen, I'm sorry, but have you looked at everyone's sim scores? You are leagues ahead of the rest of us." I said, looking at the beast in question while Kallen giggled slightly.

What exactly Dr. Chawla had done to create the 'radiant wave surger' I was not sure of. What I did know was the damn thing seemed be like if Chernobyl's ruptured reactor was concentrated into the hand of that machine, to be unleashed on command. Which was why, once Narita was over, I was going to try to convince Lelouch to move my into her R&D staff. If I could get her to verify that my graphene idea would help reduce world reliance on sakuradite, it would make it easier to get Cornelia to accept that the Brits didn't need to occupy Japan any longer.

'Well, nothing more to do but get to Narita and hope it doesn't become my tomb'.

Getting into Narita had been relatively easy, but finding a place to observe from that was sheltered and safe from the possible lahars had been a crapshoot.

But I had observed unarmored but uniformed Brit soldiers quietly approaching and evacing civilians as I searched. No road blocks or anything like that yet, but it was still a needed effort, so I knew Euphie was taking my message seriously. Which was a good sign, as I needed her power to get rid of Mao before Lelouch returned to Ashford and hopefully her efforts would keep Joseph Fenette out of harms way. Until I could confirm Mao's death, I couldn't undertake more direct measures to change things.

I was at a stop light on my way to a large office complex on my scooter when a hand landed on my shoulder and I looked straight into the face of Jeremiah Gottwald.

"Sir, I need you to halt. There is going to military action against terrorist in this area today, and we have orders to make sure our own citizens are in a safe area when the fighting begins." He said in a tone that barely concleaded how much he didn't want to be doing this sort of work.

"Uh, ok, yes sir. Where should I put my scooter to keep it safe?" I asked, trying not to make her suspicious of me.

"You may bring it. Follow along behind the vans that are gather one block down the street. They will take you to the field hospital set up behind the Sub-Viceroy's headquarters. Good day sir." Jeremiah said calmly before moving away, likely to look for more civies to evac.

"Ok, well at least Orange is unlikely to end up microwaved by the Guren this time."

I headed down to the parked vans, and was told by the guards to stand by at the back of the line till the convoy moved out. I complied, and once in position, I pulled out my sat phone and sent Euphie a text.

"I am pleased to see your people take the protection of your citizens seriously when a royal order is behind it. I will be in the field hospital you set up in a short time; we need to talk face to face. I will text you my location when I arrive; send for Jeremiah Gottwald when you wish to meet me and bring him with you, but dismiss all other guards from your person. You'll understand why if you listen to what I have to say to both of you; it is for your ears only."

With that sent, I sat on my scooter and kept my eyes on the mountain.

"If Villeta is alive, she may have still contacted Diethard. Once Mao is gone, they are my next concern. Maybe I can get Zero to dispose of them if I give him reason to think Diethard could tie Zero to Ashford because of Villeta. Of course that means trusting fate won't screw both me and Lelouch if I try to involve him in it."

"All vehicle start engines, convoy moves in 2." I heard a guard shout.

I knew I had to alert Zero that I would be going dark for security reasons, other wise he may try to contact me at an inopportune time.

"Zero, need to go dark, being rounded up with other civies. Town likely empty soon, but not 100% confident." I texted Zero as I started the engine.

Several minutes later, the convoy had reached the outer edge of the town itself and entered into the forested areas. I noticed an odd rumble in the ground and saw the top of what had to be that mobile headquarters the Euphie was aboard rolling by about 100 meters distant. We moved past it and further back through several support units, before coming into a large field with multiple tents of various types spread around, a couple Knightmares on guard duty, and a bunch of medical vehicles.

"All right, all citizens are to stay with their vehicles unless instructed otherwise. You will be allowed a bathroom break every half hour, but for your safety we cannot allow you to stand outside the vehicles till the all clear has sounded." A familiar voice said from the front of the column.

"Well, it figures he'd volunteer for duty like this instead of sitting around feeling useless in the Lancelot's hanger." I thought as he looked the vehicles over for injured in his pilot's outfit.

I just sat on my scooter, trying to remain calm while he approached me.

"Sir, are you injured in anyway" Suzaku asked, then saw my had and smiled apologetically while saying "injured further I mean."

"No sir." I said, to which Suzaku's smile became more geniune as he moved back towards the head of the column. Or at least started to.

"Have I seen you before somewhere, sir?" He ask, looking back at me.

"Maybe, I work as a pizza delivery guy." I stated, hoping my cover would hold.

"Hmm...yeah, I think I remember escorting you once. Well, have a good day, sir." He said and continued on his way.

I pulled out my phone and pretended to play the local Sims equivalent, while also typing a message to Euphie informing her of my location. Several minutes later, Suzaku walked back down the column and looked at me again, as if I'd grown a third arm.

"Sir, I have been ordered by the Sub-Viceroy herself to bring you to a secured tent to await a interview related to the local situation." He said calmly, but was still looking very askance at me as he lead me to a small transport.

A short ride later found us on the edge of the camp, where Suzaku lead me to a small meeting tent, where he waited outside while leaving me sitting at a desk.

"Guess this is it, make or break time." I said as I sat down an waited for the Princess to arrive.

When Euphie entered the tent, it was with Gottwald, and the man was eyeing me like I was an alien.

"Hello Mister Pi. I am surprised you decided to contact me directly like this so soon, as it sounded like more things needed to happen before you could give me more information? And why you insisted Lord Jeremiah accompany me to meet you?" Euphie said, a curious look on her face.

"Your Highness, My Lord, time is not on any of our sides at this moment, so I will be brief; I didn't plan to get caught up in the civie evacuation. My plan was to reconnoiter the town to see that the evac was done, then relay observations, and handle this after the battle. Now I cannot give either of you the information I want to pass along just yet, as there is one final condition that needs to be met. Now I will need..." I was saying before Jeremiah interrupted me.

"Your Highness, you should not allow this commoner to address you so casually or make demands of you. It is beneath you, and can you imagine what the Viceroy would say." Gottwald said, looking at me with barely disguised contempt.

"Lord Jeremiah, please, this is not just a commoner. He is a private intelligence source for myself and has information I want to know." Euphie said plainly.

"Ah, pardon my ignorance, your Highness." Jeremiah said deferentially.

"Now before you ask me anymore questions Your Highness, no, I cannot reveal what Iyou want to know till the final condition is fulfilled. I need Your Highness to detach Lord Jeremiah to assist me in Tokyo post-haste, as what needs doing is beyond my ability to do alone. I also need him to leave behind any communication equipment that could be tracked; not for my safety, but for both of yours. Now My Lord, I assume you are at least semi-proficient in long distance marksmanship, and have access to a rifle that can make a 600 yard shot somewhere you can get it or have it fetched on short notice, correct? I ask, because simply put, there is a man who needs to die before I can safely say more, and the shot most be done from more than a 600 yards away for reasons I cannot disclose." I said to Orange.

"I am some what skilled in that regard. Getting the rifle is as simple as requesting one from the armory aboard her Highness's headquarters. Though, your Highness, I am needed here more, in case the JLF puts up more of a fight than expected, not on a private assassination mission. And going without a means to communicate is insane." Jeremiah said to Euphie.

"I have a private line to Mister Pi, so communications are covered. One pilot less is unlikely to make any difference, even if the JLF are more capable than the Viceroy expects. I do not approve or like this sort of violence, but the information Mister Pi has promised me is...beyond valuable, to both me and likely the Viceroy herself. So I will swallow my bile and allow this. Lord Jeremiah, I hereby order you to escort and assist Mister Pi in Tokyo with his mission. He has been trustworthy to this point and I am going to trust him on this as well." Euphie said to Jeremiah, who bowed in acknowledgement of the order.

"As Your Highness wills it. Now, Mister Pi, I do not expect we can both fit on that scooter of yours, so I will requisition a transport for our purposes." Jeremiah said before starting to walk out of the tent.

"Hold on My Lord, this matter is complicated and using an official transport could endanger my ability to give the Princess the knowledge she desires. A civilian vehicle would be safer." I said, knowing that a military transport in the civie areas of the Tokyo Settlement could, at this point, be odd enough that Mao takes note of it and changes his time-table. He was due to be on the grounds of Ashford the next day, which was the first and best chance to get at him before he got going with his manipulation of Shirley. Speaking of...

"Hmm, actually, one other request I would like an answer to. Your Highness, could you have your guards check for a middle aged, red haired man by the name of Joeseph Fennette among the civilians evacuated from the town? He's the father of a friend of a good customer of mine, and I wanted to make sure he's ok in return." I said, not technically lying; CC had been a very good tipper, and it was Lelouch's cash.

The Princess chuckled a little at that, before replying "I will, in exchange for one bit of information from you. Lord Jeremiah, I want you to go fetch a car from one of the doctors in the field hospital; tell them that Princess Euphemia will reimburse them for any damages or loss of transportation." Jeremiah bowed before leaving the tent.

"Ok, deal, but if I cannot answer you safely yet, I will say so." I said, wondering what she was going to ask.

"Why Pi for your alias?" the Princess asked.

"Oh, that. Well, my boss calls himself after a number, and I wanted an alias that went with his theme. I picked Pi because I represent an irrational element in a otherwise semi-rational world." I said with a grin.

"What's so irrational about you, besides being a Britannian inside the Black Knights?" she asked.

"...more than I can safely say now, and frankly more than you would ever likely believe." I said, looking her dead in the eyes.

"Hmm, well, I guess I'll keep trusting you for now. I must return to my duties in the command center; when you and Lord Jeremiah return, I want my trust repaid." She said, in a much more serious tone than she usually used.

"You have my word, Your Highness. Thank you for honoring my request and being patient about this." I said, this time sweeping into a low bow.

"Very well; I will inform Lord Jeremiah to pick you up from this tent when he has procured the vehicle. I will have your scooter secured till you return. Good day, Mister Pi." Euphie said, before exiting the tent.

"Hmm, well, wonder how much trust she'll have left for me when Zero blows the mountain and goes after Cornelia."

Jeremiah returned several minutes later with an unobtrusive looking sedan sized car with a large rifle and spotter set-up in the trunk in a pair of dufflebags. We had been on the road about 15 minutes, riding in silence with me in the back, when we passed 2 trucks headed into town.

"That's probably Tohdoh and company; banzai colonel, you're in for some nasty shocks in a little while."

Euphie texted me shortly after this.

"Did you know the mountain would explode and Zero would be there?" the text read.

"Ah, looks like Zero's kicked his gambit off."

"
I had knowledge that the Black Knights were in the area and that the town may be in danger, but Zero had not shared with me the specifics of his plan." I texted back; I received no reply, which was expected given what Euphie was likely dealing with and how she may have felt about my involvement.

The drive into Tokyo took a bit, but eventually Jeremiah and I entered the Settlement proper.

"Ok, Lord Jeremiah, you have a better tactical mind than myself and likely know the Settlement better as well. We need to find a spot more than 600 meters, but no more than 700 meters, from the Ashford Academy campus to set up on. Do you know of a location that would fit?" I asked.

"...there are several large office building that could work, but would require us to deal with curious commoners potentially interfering in whatever it is that must be done here. Our other option is a maintenance gantry on one of the solar collectors; far more secure and I can get us in with my military credentials. Finally, if that will not suffice, I could requisition a police aircraft to suite your needs." Jeremiah said with barely disguised disgruntlement. He was definitely not happy being stuck on this assignment.

"Lord Jeremiah, I think the solar collector is a best choice. However, I also understand that you are not happy about the order the Princess gave you, so I will give you reason to want to do this. But only if I have your word you will not ask further questions till we have informed the Princess that the task has been accomplished." I said evenly.

"You have my word as a Knight, a Margrave, and a man that I will not question you further if you are willing to give me a reason to trust you and see this mission through with my whole conviction." Jeremiah said, in a surprisingly genuine tone.

"I'll take it. The information the Princess wants, and I have, relates to the Ares Villa incident and the real attacker who killed Empress Marianne. That's all you are getting for now, but I hope it is enough-ack, what?!" I hollered as Jeremiah threw the car onto the shoulder of the road and slammed the breaks, before looking back at me with an intensity that actually was sort of frightening.

He just looked at me for a minute, not saying anything, while I silently wondered if I had misread him, before restarted the car and pulled back onto the road.

"I gave you my word, and I will keep my promise, but know this; I was a guard at Ares Villa the night that horrible event occurred. The second our task is accomplished and you have informed the Princess, you will give me answers or you will be missing more fingers." Jeremiah stated in a tone that was full of barely contained anger and grief as he drove us towards on to the solar collector arrays.

"You drive a hard bargain...how about a compromise. I will show you evidence of what I am talking about while we wait for the target to appear, and you get one question when I point it out." I said, deciding that Jeremiah seeing Nunnally through a sniper scope would be safe enough.

"...I will accept that. When we get to the gate, just be quiet and I will handle things. Your cover will be as an efficiency inspector who is here to do a spot inspection of the arrays maintenance." Jeremiah said to me as we moved into more official looking buildings near the arrays.

"You do realize we could be up there for 1 or 2 days, right. Our targets time-frame for being on campus is not exact." I mentioned.

"The spot I've chosen has access to a rudimentary washroom for technicians. There are a couple protein bars and water bottles in with the spotter kit; that will have to suffice till we are finished here. Or are you commoners too soft for such hardships?" He snarked at me.

"I will adapt to the conditions we are faced with; this is too important to let personal comfort get in the way." I replied.

Getting through the gate was easy, as no one wanted to hassle an inspector and his escort, even if a few officers did seem to chuckle at the great Jeremiah Gottwald being stuck with this duty.

About 30 minutes after we reached the arrays, the two of us were safely ensconced in a maintenance shed part way up one of the catwalks. It wasn't a perfect view of Ashford, but given Mao was shown to be on the roof when he first appeared on campus, it was less of a hassle than it could be. However, getting a view on the clubhouse, and Nunnally, was more difficult.

"My Lord, I am not sure when the evidence I spoke of will present itself, or if it will be visible from here. If it is visible at all, it will be near or within the small clubhouse structure off to the side of the main buildings. Can you see into that area right now?" I asked when we had the equipment fully set up and were in our positions.

"I believe I can, though only one side of the building and a few windows. What am I looking for?" He asked, surveying the campus.

"A young girl in a motorized wheelchair, either coming from or exiting that building." I replied calmly, as examined the different gates of the school, in order figure out Mao's most likely entry point.

"And the target you need killed? What am I looking for." Jeremiah asked reasonably.

"Sorry, but for the same reasons we need to take this shot from so far away, I cannot divulge that information till I have the target sighted. I will tell you, to ease your mind, that it is not a child, student, or fellow Britannian who is the target. Keep your eyes on the roofs and open spaces, I'll monitor the entrances to the campus." I said, taking a risk because I had no idea which direction Mao would approach the school from, or if he would pass by the array close enough to possibly here Jeremiah's or my thoughts.

We had been up there for about 3 hours when Jeremiah started.

"I'm seeing a group of girls exiting the clubhouse, one of them's in a wheelchair." Jeremiah said. I immediately shifted my view over to the same area, and confirmed what he was seeing.

"Ok, My Lord, that girl in the wheelchair, does she look at all familar to you?" I asked, not knowing if Jeremiah had ever had a chance to see her at Ares Villa before the attack.

"...there is something about her...I feel like I've seen that head of hair before somewhere." Jeremiah said, looking intently at the group.

I took a deep breath, then took the verbal plunge. "Well if you were a guard at Ares Villa for any length of time, you probably did. That young girl is Nunnally Vi Britannia."

Chapter 23

It took several seconds for Jeremiah to process what I had just told, him, before his eyes grew wide and he looked back down the scope to take a better look at Nunnally.

"...does Master Lelouch still live as well?" Jeremiah said, his voice barely a whisper.

"Yep; they're hiding out at Ashford under their mother's maiden name. I discovered this several years ago, but kept it to myself." I stated, hoping Jeremiah would be able to keep it together long enough to kill Mao, before rushing off to swear loyalty to the Vi Britannias.

"Reuben Ashford was a friend of Lady Marianne, I guess it is comforting to know he is looking after her children. Though I do not understand why they would stay in hiding, instead of returning home? Do they think their mother's assassins could still be after them?" Jeremiah pondered, as we watched the girls enter another of the campus buildings.

"My Lord, there is much you do not know. I promised Princess Euphemia that I would reveal what I know to her after the man we are targeting is dead. We need to focus on that, and I need you to try to keep you mind clear and off this knowledge as much as you can, till we've confirmed the target is dead." I said as I watched the campus, and area around it, for any sign of Mao.

"Someone is going to notice a dead body with bullet holes in it, even if they don't notice the shots themselves. Do you have a plan to deal with that, Mister Pi?" Jeremiah asked.

"I have a line to Mr. Ashford, and once the target is dead, I'll phone him to tell him a foreign national suspected of being a sexual predator interested in his granddaughter was just killed by the Black Knights, and that he needs to have the coroner come collect the body." I stated, wishing there was a less risky way to handle it.

"Why would he believe that? Unless...is Mr. Ashford in league with Zero!?" Jeremiah said, with incredulity in his voice.

"Yes and no; it's complicated. Suffice to say, Mr. Ashford is a friend of Zero's, even if he's not aware of it. It's part of what I need to speak to the Princess about." I hedged.

"Hmm, sheltering Lady Marianne's children, and being a friend to Zero...Mr. Ashford has a lot of secrets it seems." Jeremiah intoned, sounding conflicted.

"Best to put it out of your mind for now My Lord; once the target is dead, a lot of secrets will be safe to share." I said, hoping to get Jeremiah's head back in the game. He looked at me and nodded.

The evening and night went by without any sighting of Mao. I received no communications from either Euphie or the Black Knights, which slightly worried me. Lelouch knew I'd gone dark, so he probably won't reach out till after the dust settled, but I figured Euphie would have wanted to speak with me at least a little after the battle concluded, even if just to ask how the mission was progressing.

"Probably has her hands full dealing with everything, I guess."

It was just after 7 am the next morning when, after many long hours of watching the grounds, I finally spied the first hint of our target.

"My Lord, I believe I just saw the target entering the campus near the south gate. I only saw some hair as he went around a building, but I think it is him. Look for a young Asian man with lanky spiked platinum hair, a wrap-around visor, and headphones; he won't be in a student uniform. That'll be the target. We need to ensure he's dead, so I expect it will take more than one shot." I said with as calmly as I could.

"With that description, I should be able to track him easily when he's out in the open. See if you can find any flags or banners moving nearby, I need to know what the wind is doing to make these shots. I will maintain watch on that area." Jeremiah requested.

I checked around, and found a few flags on the campus, but not much else.

"It looks like only a light easterly wind right now." I informed Jeremiah.

"Understood. I will watch the grounds around the building, you watch the roofs. I want you to confirm the target before I fire." Jeremiah said, adjusting his position to hold the rifle steadier, while calming his breathing.

It was only a couple of minutes before Mao reappeared.

"Right side of that building, I see someone fitting the description near the bushes." Jeremiah stated. I hastily shifted my view, and there was Mao, right were Jeremiah said he was.

"Confirm, that is the target. Fire at will." I said, and knew I was derailing the plot for good now.

Jeremiah didn't hesitate. The first round was on the mark, and hit Mao in the chest just as he was turning to move into a doorway into the building. Jeremiah fired again, to finish the job.

Unfortunately, it was also at that moment Nina Einstein came out of the doorway, and saw the second round impact Mao's head not 5 feet in front of her. Nina's scream was so loud, we even heard a faint echo of it on our perch.

"Shit, ok, that's not good, was hoping to keep this from being seen by the students. I need to make that call to Mr. Ashford before things get too out of hand." I said, grabbing my normal cell phone and hitting the speed dial. I cursed when all I got was a messaging machine.

"Mr. Ashford, it's Mr. Franklin. There has been an incident on your campus. No time for a detailed explanation, but there was a Chinese national on campus who I had information was a sexual predator and was interested in Milly. He's dead, shot twice via sniper rifle by a member of the Black Knights, so the threat has passed. But it happened near the female high school dorm, and a student witnessed it. She will need to be seen to, due to witnessing a traumatic event, and the coroner needs to come collect the body before there is too much of a scene. I will be in touch." I said, before ending the message.

Jeremiah was already collecting the bags and equipment. After I ended the call, he shoved the spotter equipment into my arms.

"Someone will have heard those shots, and will come to investigate. We need to be out of here before they lock the complex down; I cannot guarantee we can get out unnoticed if that happens." Jeremiah said, before starting down the catwalks stairs.

It was a frantic next several minutes as we almost jumped down many flights of stairs. The car Euphie had commandeered for us was right where we left it, and we tossed the bags in the trunk in a hurry.

"I need to let the Princess know we've completed the mission, get us back to Narita as fast as you can." I said to Jeremiah, as I belted myself in.

"Of course. I will, however, expect you to answer a few questions of my own on the way back." Jeremiah stated flatly.

"My Lord, I would prefer to not need to answer questions twice, so I will ask that you wait till we meet with the Princess. She may also have evidence of her own to back up what I will say. Take us back to the same tent we all met at before, and I'll let the Princess know where we will be." I requested.

"Hmm, very well." Jeremiah said, clearly not happy with the answer but seeing the logic in it.

I pulled out the sat phone and began texting Euphie.

"The mission was a success, but was more visible than I had hoped. Will relay more details when we arrive, but Lord Jeremiah can confirm at least part of the information I will be giving you. Meet us in the same tent we spoke in before. Pi out."

"Well, looks like Nina get another bad memory to add to whatever happened in the ghetto. Maybe it'll keep her from pursuing her uranium research for a while."

AN: So, that's the end of Mao, and the start of a massively derailed plot. This didn't come out exactly as a I wanted it too, but I hope it was an enjoyable chapter for everyone.

Now, this is an issue I had hoped would not need to be addressed, but I was not able to share the link to this new host and thread myself in my old SB thread, and asking a friend to do it caused the old thread on SB to be locked because of the responses it garnered. Lies spread at the end of that thread were probably meant to scare my readers away from this site, but if any of you are seeing this please comment or like it to let me know you are still reading the fic.

I’m confused. Does SB hate this or something? I only heard about it when another thread I followed migrated here. Definitely enjoying this story though. Good riddance to Mao.

Why are they doing that? This story doesn't seem to be extreme in any way, so why would they raise an issue over it?

The Staff of SB claimed it was 'ban evasion', though it is obvious it was thier last petty way to screw with me after the ban went through.

They, and the people who spread the lies about this site at the end of the thread, were trying to kill the fic by driving away my readers.

Well, I knew that creative writing was next to the firing line. Most of the mods on SB now are culturally from non-scifi debates- recruiting moderators from that cess-pit is half their problem.
