The Galactica and its Fleet jump into the Altered Carbon Solar System.

Since nuBSG Galactica threads are in right now, I decided to throw in a few less obvious ideas.
The premise is quite simple, the Galactica and its fleet jump into the Solar System of Altered Carbon.
This will happen around the end of the first book and will occur right after the events of New Caprica.

An alternate scenario would involve a rebel Cylon base star jumping into sol.

In both cases, this happens right after the end of the first book/T.V. series season.(I never saw the show, btw.)

They may consider nuking earth since the whole brain computer back up might remind them of Cylons?

I am more interested what the Cylons would think, tbh.
Although don't forget that Earth has lots of colonies, so they probably have some military infrastructure and resource mining up in space.
A civilization of near immortals takes up a lot of resources, and so does sublight travel for colonization.

So I think that they should have at least some space borne capabilities.

And don't forget that the rich assholes had their brains backed up in outer space, and probably had orbiting boltholes there, too, I doubt those are left unprotected. And the Martians were a thing, so probably the UN has some space security assets just in case shit hits the fan, either space or Earth-side.
And the UN will do anything and everything to get its grubby paws on some of that advanced tech, so will every single insurgency group and planetary oligarchy with expansionist ambitions.
Furthermore, don't forget that the AC humans have the option to just irradiate their planets with dirty nukes and "winter over" in bunkers as compressed data.
The Colonials do not have that luxury, and I am pretty sure a lot of them will be willing to say "Fuck this shit" and side with the AC UN in exchange for de-fact immortality.
Roslin is dying, after all, and Tigh can probably use a new liver, and Baltar will probably love to upload his Mind Six to a storage that is not his cranium, and maybe join her in VR.

Something, something, an envoy is sent to first contact, something something, Earth now has jump drives.

Seriously though I imagine the colonials are met with much sceptism but ultimately welcomed. They need a home essentially and infrastructure amd for earth they possess valuable tech.

The real challeneg would be integration on the colonials part although I see them forming their own little enclave somewhere.

For the UN I see a massive tech up in ships and cyber defence for the possibilty of invasion and the opportunity to ease overcrowding and use some warm bodies to create a space force to liberate/take back the colonies and its resources

I don't think the ACUN was starved for planets, their main problem was that they were working at sublight travel speed and their only FTL was hypercom mind transfer.

IMO if the jumpdrive tech proliferates then that means that the control over colonization the UN had is gone and every single separatist group can and will flee.

Interstellar trade actually becomes a thing.

Good point. Only thing is I doubt they'd be able to keep the jump tech completely secret. I can see them using it sort of like the spacing guild and trying to keep a monoply on ftl travel. So sort of like lots of smaller sub light craft strapped to a massive carrier craft

Considering how many potential splinter factions and oligarchs and A.I.s there are around, I doubt that it will stay secret for long.
Tbh one funny option would be for the Colonials to decide Earth/the U.N. is too evil and to side with some rebellious faction, like maybe those rebels on Harlan's world, was it?
Their ideological godmother was quoted quite often.

The UN can side with the Cylons since it doesn't care that much about A.I.s gaining sentience, iirc there was at least one hotel that had bought and ran itself.
