Marders were built for AT purposes, hence the long gun. StuG's were built for infantry support which is why they had the snub gun.
Of course later on the StuG got a long-gun too, but it's purpose was primarily as a self propelled infantry gun rather than a self propelled AT gun. Semantics I know, but that's how they used them.
The 'self propelled AT gun' was more jagdpanzer IV and Hetzer.

Why would they need that when they had plenty of other Panzers, including PZ4's which had far better cannons?

They need them in panzer division,not supporting infrantry.

Germans had already designed the StuG III for that purpose. Also, they found uses for their captured French tanks - airbase defence, anti-partisan duty(a Renault R35 will go a lot of places in the Balkans that are beyond heavier tanks). Lastly, the limitations of those one-man turrets were really big - it would have been a pain to integrate those in German first- or second-line units.

Not enough stugs, and french tanks would be good enough to help infrantry take trenches.

Thanks ! fun thing - romanians never manage to mass produce it till they switch sides,and after that,soviets forbid them from doing so.
On another topic - Maresal with it light armour could be mass produced by anybody before WW2 - interesting,how History would change,if,let say,Poland do not waste money on 7tp,but made maresals? i think,that we could made at least 350 for the same money.

No change. Once the Nazi-Soviet treaty was signed it was all over except for the dying ...

no,becouse sralin was coward.In OTL he promised Hitler to attack together with him,but waited till 17.9.39 - becouse he was not sure,what France would do.
Only after France decided 12.9.39 that there would be no big offensive,Sralin decided 14.9.39 to attack us.
