United Colonies, Freestar Collective. LIST, those are the big 3 with Spacers, Crimson Fleet taking the place of Raiders and Ecliptic are mercenaries.

They need a third faction to make it interesting. How hard would it have been to make the Spacers their own group the player could join at some point?

Spacers are sick and tired of both the FC+UC, and want nothing to do with them but the two governments keep attacking them to either 'remove the threat' or force them to become 'civilized'.

Has anyone encountered any in-game lore/explanation for the background of the Ecliptic mercenaries? They seem like Talon Company/Gunner In SPACE!, but I'm hoping there is more to it than that.
Ecliptic are basically a criminal organization. Like, even more criminal than DynCorp or Blackwater. Ever been to one of their secret bases, the Vulture's Roost? The place is jam-packed with contraband. Harvested organs and stuff.

It's a mystery why the UC or FC semi-tolerate them, but you can sometimes see SysDef fleets engaging Ecliptic ships.

You know some of the areas and ideas... why are all of the robots legged? Where are the large ones that roll or have treads? Also where are the ground vehicles at? Don't they have cars and trucks in the future? You can use Helium 3 to go to the stars but not fuel a transport?

there are vehicles, of a sort, around the game - those 4 legged/tracked things seem everywhere. Though those seem (based on placement) to be more for cargo than passengers. Also, none of them actually work. which is odd- they can keep spaceships, mines, reactors, etc working and not space-trucks?

As for the robots, got me beat. Given artificial gravity, and the fact that an appreciable chunk of settlements are in low-gee locations, would have thought it would be easy to leverage that for floating bots & drones.

Hell look at Fallout. They have tracked robots, robots with legs and floating robots. Could you imagine how useful a Mr. Handy would be on a space station?

One mechanic they could have implemented is being allowed to make your own ship parts from scratch. You have the resources, you have the equipment...

would have been a useful way to soak up some of the massive stockpiles of crafting materials my character accretes as a side effect of trying to build up an outpost network.

Also a way to make more credits. Pay say a 10k to 15k 'licensing fee' and you can build anyone's ship parts and later in the game they pay you to make modules for them.

Brings a new dimension to shipbuilding. Start with Nova Galactic since they seem to be out of business and go from there.

Another mechanic could be some of the parts can be used to build your outpost with. The hab modules and cafeteria. Set up enough of them on some frequently visited dirt ball with a nice He3 operation and you got an interstellar truck stop. Add in a Wayland Yutani...opps Free Trade Authority kiosk and there you go.

As long as you keep things going and supply He3. You get a steady stream of credits to your account. They did something like it in Fallout 4 with the stores you could build and stock. Only here? You start with a kiosk. Then upgrade to a one man store, then to a two man operation.

Wait, if you can't use the mined material for ship parts, what can you use it for?

You use it for crafting and base building.

Also,
Who else figured out that heat leeches were baby terrormorphs? I mean ships spread the damn things and terrormorphs also spread around. I figured it was how they spread around. Either that or xenogrubs.

I thought it was obvious from the fact that the buggers would show up on worlds that didn't have any fauna listed. When I ran into a bunch out on Mars while toddling around, it was damn suspicious. When I finally saw their little egg/nests, in the next crater over, the first thought was - "Aliens expy, 2 o'clock". Not gonna lie - still convinced xenogrubs are some part of the leech-morph lifecycle.

So...heatleech eggs hatch into Xenogrubs. The grubs then spread out and given they look harmless people ignore them until they can change into a heatleech when near something with enough warmth. Heat leeches take a certain amount of time to mature into Terrormorphs. Unless something like Lazarus pollen accelerates the process.

You know Bethesda missed a golden opportunity of having you visit the first planet you explore to get data from that one UC scientific outpost that was working on Xenoweapons.

If you go back and recheck the logs from that planet (kreet, IIRC) you'll find that lab was attempting to xenowarfare mind-control terrormorphs. And failed, badly. Pretty sure there was some amount of evidence on the lifecycle there. But I know I overlooked at least some of it, and can't be bothered to check through the 90-gazillion 'Notes' to find the ones from back then. (NB: to BGS - there should be some way in game of tracking when/where you found a one of these digipad or other Notes) Also (mind, this may already be a thing, have not finished the outpost builder perk chain) we need some bookshelf equivalent for storing books, notes, and digipads rather than carrying around several hundred 'weightless' SPACE!tablets. They may be weightless, but they should retain volume, no?

Tell me about it. I have a ton of planets I have survey data for. I also intend to set a base up on Cassiopeia in that rainforest area where you go during one of Sarah's quests.

I thought the idea was to wait until your commerce score was high enough and sell that data to Vladimir or the TA for mad lootz?

Not sure if the higher levels of commerce are worth it. Level 1 is 10%. The next 3 are only a 5% increase.
huh - didn't notice that - haven't bothered going beyond the first rank yet (I make it a point to unlock as many of the first rank as possible, if only to check for amusing conversation/quest options).
