ISOT Smaug & The Lonely Mountain in the Crownlands? Mad King Aerys’ Reign

CarlManvers2019

As the title says, Smaug The Golden and the dwarven mountain kingdom of Erebor and all its gold find itself in the Crownlands during Aerys Targaryen’s reign

This maybe before or after he goes mad in Duskendale

Presumably Aerys somehow finds out about Smaug in either cases

How does Westeros fare when it’s sorta clear that Smaug is pretty much a Hikkikomori with an addiction to gold and expensive jewelry and as such isn’t probably gonna eat entire villages and farm animal herds

Well, for starters Smaug may decide to occupy Casterly Rock unless the Lanisters are willing to ship all their gold to him by the wagon load... For second, Aerys is going to have the bright idea of trying to ride him.... which will end in all the fire everywhere. Smaug makes Belarion look like a babe just growing into toddler-hood so nothing in Westeros is going to be even the slightest threat to him. Of course the Westerosi are going to lose a few bands of "heroic knights" and probably some cities in retaliation for said knights before they learn to leave the bloody dragon the hell alone.

What about Rhaegar?
uhhh... Best guess? Something something prophecy bullshit and he either gets turned to ash too (kicking off a civil war succession crisis) or becomes another nutty king who enjoys kidnapping noble maidens without their father's permission and kicks off a civil war that way. Smaug won't really effect much of that unless he destroys Kings Landing before Rhaegar can do something stupid. Either way, civil war happens, but Smaug might be annoyed enough at armies making a ruckus on his doorstep to destroy any armies fighting around his lair. Although, now that I think about it, if Smaug destroys Kings Landing and the Targs at the same time, there might be no civil war at all. The kingdoms would just declare independence since the capital city and royal family would be gone with no direct heir or anything to inherit.

How big is Balerion? Granted he's not in this scenario but I am curious.

In the behind the scenes stuff, Smaug (in the movies) is supposed to be about 130 meters long, the size of two jumbo jets or so) and there's never been a direct size given to the dragon in the books AFAIK beyond various artwork. And Drogon (in the TV series) is the size of only one 747 as opposed to two according to the creators so just maybe a smidgen over half the size of Smaug.

Smaug kills where he wills and non resist.
"Revenge! Revenge! King under the Mountain is dead and where are his kin that dare seek revenge? Girion Lord of Dale is dead, and I have eaten his people like a wolf among sheep, and where are his sons' sons that dare approach me? I kill where I wish and none dare resist. I laid low the warriors of old and their like is not in the world today. Then I was but young and tender. Now I am old and strong, strong, strong, Thief in the Shadows!"

“My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!"

The point about the gold though - a winged firedrake draws its power from the vast energies that Morgoth disseminated into the very substance of Middle-earth, metals like gold in particular.
Imagine if a firedrake like Smaug was nuclear powered, slept on top of a huge pile of Uranium - and had to return there to "recharge" after a spree of killing where he wished, etc.
Well, it's basically like that - just with the magical power inherent in gold.

Can I ask where you're getting this from? I only ask because as a long time Tolkien fan, this is the first time I've heard about this.

Smaug being more-or-less invincible aside, I can see other forces and powers deciding that his presence can be used to their advantage

Smaug's presence may or may not jumpstart magical powers on the Planetos

And there maybe people like the Warlocks of Meereen and Asshai'i or R'hllorite Priests who think they can bind him to their will

Though they might be willing and able to wait a few lifetimes while at it

Here's a good essay on the subject:

There certainly weren't masses of gold in Angband to recharge the first dragons ...

How do you know? Anyway, it's not really about gold as such. Melkor was there in person in Angband, so he could empower the dragons directly.
