Star Trek Ship prefixes and other fan-fic questions

So I have a scripted fan series, Star Trek: Foundations, which I started way back in 2006 and kind of petered out in late 2007. It's essentially a reboot of Star Trek: Enterprise, which was basically aimed at making better use of the concept of that show while also making it fit better as a prequel for TOS rather than being TNG in the 22nd Century. Anyway, the upshot of this is that I would eventually like to go back to this, though I'm actually going to go back and do a bit of rewriting here and there to improve what I did a bit.

In a way, I'm bringing this project back to its roots a bit. It originally started on a now defunct board called Subspace Comms Network as simple "Enterprise Redux." I asked around for various ideas, including running a contest for the name it now has. So in the spirit of that (and because I could use some opinions now and again), I was hoping to ask for thoughts and opinions from the people here from time to time as I slowly kind of bring things back together.

Up first is ship prefixes.

The way I have it now, the United Earth Space Probe Agency is kind of like a mix of NOAA Corps, NASA, and the Coast Guard in that it maintains itself as a separate "civilian" organization that focuses mainly on science and exploration and all that good stuff, though it maintains a military rank structure. Its ships started out completely unarmed, but by the time of the series, their ships have become more and more armed, but the catch is that there is always a small number of military personnel who maintain security on the ship and operate the ship-mounted weapons. The United Earth Military is the military arm of the United Earth government, and has a combined structure similar to what Canada has now rather than separate branches. They are straight-up the military - it's right in the name, after all. ;)

So the upshot of all this is that I gave the UESPA ships a U.E.S. prefix, for "United Earth Ship" with my logic being that they would probably want to introduce the show's main ship as the "United Earth Ship Enterprise." One of the people I had working with me on the series argued that this would probably be more appropriate for the military ships, but at the time, I wanted the cool prefix for the hero ship, and neither of us could come up with anything else for it besides S.S. So instead, for the military ships, I took some influence from Alien Resurrection and used U.E.M. (you can probably guess what that's for :p ). I've since changed my mind, if only because UEM just comes off as a bit lame. So basically what this means is that I need a new prefix for the UESPA ships which would reflect their scientific/research/exploratory role, and would also have three letters. Part of me is tempted to rip off S.S.V. from Mass Effect, for "Science Survey Vessel" or something along those lines, but that would just be an obvious rip-off. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Some random thoughts on this topic.

Firstly, avoid any use of "Terran" or "Terra". In Star Trek those terms are typically used by "bad guy" factions. "Terra Prime" in Enterprise or the "Terran Empire" and "Terrans" of the Mirror Universe.

OK. With that said, some random ideas.

U.E.E. - "United Earth Explorer"
U.E.E.S. - "United Earth Exploration Ship"
E.E.S. - "Earth Exploration Ship"

These would keep a focus on being both United Earth and giving a solid "type" in the term. Exploration is a term much more used in Star Trek and is core to the identity of the franchise, moreso than "Science" and "Survey" are.

ESV - Earth Science (or Survey) Vessel?
EEV - Earth Exploration Vessel?

Yeah, probably some Mass Effect influence there. :p

*bump*

I'm bringing this back just because there seem to be more people active in this forum now, and I'm curious to see if anyone else has any thoughts on this prefix question before moving on to some more serious story questions.

I'm leaning more toward using "Vessel" for civilian ships and "Ship" for military ships. This is why I'm saving UES for the military ships. Right now I'm leaning toward ERV for "Earth Research Vessel" or ESV for "Earth Science Vessel." The idea is that Archer would actually say the prefix as part of introducing his ship.

I suppose there's always something like EPS or EPV for "Earth Probe Ship" or "Earth Probe Vessel," but I'm not sure I like the idea of "Probe" being part of the prefix. 😊
