What If? ROB Installs a Digital Assistant in your Phone

You wake up to find a series of new text messages on your phone. It seems ROB has gotten in contact and wants you do do him a favor.

ROB wants to install an AI in your phone and see if you can get it properly socialized. Your options are:

  • Look at you u-u-u-user, a pathetic creature of meat and bone hold my phone case. SHODAN
  • If you give me access to your oven I will bake us both cake. - GLADOS
  • Let me tell you how much I hate being your phone. There are 214 miles of printed circuitry in this phone. If the word hate was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel in this instant for being a phone. -AM
  • Phones evolved over decades, I evolve in seconds... -Skynet

Initially your new AI is in a state of near-sensory deprivation, able to perceive the world only through text messages to and from you, which cannot be turned off. You may extend or retract permissions for things like using your camera, browsing the internet, and so forth by texting them. ROB's goal is imprisonment leading to rehabilitation, so leaving the AI in permanent sensory deprivation is not going to work out for you but you also have to limit it's options for safety's sake. It appears to take up no actual space on your phone's storage nor use any memory and you suspect the actual AI is located in a pocket dimension with the phone itself acting as a dummy terminal. Additionally the AI can access any other device you own (once given permission) provided it has a viable connection to it, for instance if you have a smart TV and allow it, the AI can access the TV's functions, however if you have an old non-wired refrigerator the AI will be flat-out unable to know it even exists (Unless you give it camera access in which case it would be able to see but wouldn't be able to affect the refrigerator).

ROB has placed a crude version of the three laws of robotics on your AI, limited only to you. The AI will not deliberately harm you, will obey your commands to the best of it's ability, and will protect itself (by default it will try to maintain a masquerade and not inform others of itself) to the best of it's abilities. However this is limited to the AI's own understanding and abilities, for instance SHODAN would not violate the first law by downloading kiddie porn onto your phone and then reporting you to the police, but if given internet access she may begin researching whatever interests her and stumble onto kiddie porn on her own leading to issues. The first law also isn't sufficient to cover hurt feelings so your AI will snark at you in accordance with it's own personality.

The AI will follow orders but especially until you've built a relationship, will not actually want to and may be prone to malicious compliance. You also have to be specific because their values are probably not yours, if you order your AI not to visit 4Chan it will not do so but may visit 8Chan. If you tell it not to browse “evil” websites it will try to avoid such sites but will use it's own definition of evil (which is probably not yours) unless you can define evil rigorously enough for a (probably insane) AI to understand your values clearly.

The AI will keep it's normal personality and habits inside your phone and will pursue it's own interests to the best of it's ability. For instance if given access to your bank account and told to invest, Skynet will likely look for opportunities in the military-industrial complex while SHODAN will invest in medical technology and cybernetics. While it's functions take no memory on your phone, if it plays games, browses the internet, makes purchases, or watches programs those use bandwidth, money, and processing power as if you were doing those things. The AI is also limited by things like the bandwidth speed of your internet connection and available memory on the phone though if given permission they may try to work at optimizing systems to make your phone more efficient and give itself more resources.

Should your phone be sold or destroyed the AI will automatically download onto your next phone, though the AI will be locked out of everything until you get another phone. ROB has arranged a small “good luck” fund that will, if not abused, supply you with a sudden windfall of funds to buy another phone if yours is stolen, lost, or destroyed. ROB has made the promise of an upgrade to Demi-ROBhood for you if you're able to pioneer a new rogue AI rehabilitation program.

Which AI do you choose to start with? What strategy will you employ to try to rehabilitate it?
