Quack, Quack, Quack its hockey time

So the new NHL season has kicked off and all of Canadian and Amercian fans have started watching their favorite teams. So I decided to make a thread for all those hockey fans out to brag or cry about how their team is doing.

I am a Red Wing fan and so far they are off to a decent start with a 3 to 1 start.

Tonight they face off against the Maple Leafs and hopefully will keep their strong start going over Candian teams going.

So how cold are hockey stadiums? I'm thinking about going to a game for the first time.

Not very, I am fine in a long sleeve t-shrit and they tend to be about 50 degrees.

If it is your first game I would recommend a sweater with a jacket. Thay way you can not of the jacket if you get warm.

Also just like Baseball has Take Me Out To the Ball Game Hockey has this

A lot of stadiums will play it while the Zamboni makes it rounds between periods. As a last note ice cream makes a great hockey game snack just like crackerjack do for baseball games.

Let’s go Blues!!

Super excited to see how St Louis defends their 1st ever championship.

Also I can’t wait to root for the Seattle NHL team when it arrives

Who knew? Phoenix actually has a hockey team LOL

Florida has, or at least had, two, last I checked - Miami-based Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning - and both Atlanta and North Carolina also have or at least had 'em. Memphis too IIRC. Kinda weird to think about since hockey is naturally from colder climes where water surfaces freeze over and allow ice skiing.

I am surprised that the Blues even won last year. While they make make the playoffs I would not bet the farm on them winning two years in a row.

I am excited about the recent expansion. The last time the NHL got a new team was the Wild(after the great betrayal) in 2000. Now we got a new team in 2017 with Vegas and Seattle for 2021.

I do think that the NHL has the right idea of slowly adding teams and making sure that they can build up a fan base and not oversaturate the market.

You would be surprised at what Southern states have Hockey teams. Places like Vegas Golden Knights and the Florida Panthers show that Hockey is not just for the great white north.

The big problem is the lower school levels in the south. It takes a lot of money when you can not play pond hockey to build high school and traveling leagues.

Yes, but this is a desert, we barely have any water, let alone ice.

And apparently the Coyotes practice facility is right by where I live, never knew that.

True. I do not think I played in an indoor ice rink till middle school. Instead they converted baseball fields into ice rink and the equipment shed became a warming hut.

I am sad to say that the Maple Leafs won. It looks like the Red Wings are trying rely to much on Mantha and Larkin to pull off wins. Not to mention the Red Wings did not manage to turn power plays into points.

@honekitteh is a huge Hockey fan, so I get it all by osmosis.

That said, I do feel compelled to root for the most blatant Russian Collusion in the US (and 2018 Stanley Cup Champions):

Correct: Florida has the Panthers and the Lightning. Atlanta used to have two different hockey teams, but they moved becoming the Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets (formerly Atlanta Thrashers). North Carolina has the Carolina Hurricanes in Raliegh and Tennessee has the Nashville Predators. This doesn't include the Dallas Stars and the three hockey teams in California (LA Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Anaheim Ducks).

I could go on... I've loved hockey for a while but only really started paying attention (and hyperfocusing) around the time the Caps won the Stanley Cup in 2018.

I also may be fond of the Caps' yearly Dog calendar tradition... and this year, we have a team puppy. (i think the Blues started this tradition last year). (seen below with goalie Braden Holtby)

Yes, we have four russians on our current team (used to be three, but this season our rookie goaltender is also russian).

There's a picture floating somewhere when they visited the white house and the three russians were right next to Trump... but that requires digging and I'm lazy.

Now I want to know if their practice facility has an ammonia refrigeration plant.

In all seriousness, I was happy the Blues won because I could see just how badly losing the Rams had hurt St. Louis, which I found to be a very nice city when vacation there a few years ago--we were traveling to see the oldest city in the United States (which is what St. Louis, or at least the metro area, is).

So its looks like a good week for the so far for the Canadian teams. The Flames beat the Red Wings 1 to 5 and the Canadiens shut out the Wild in tonight's games.

Overall despite my hope it does look like it will be a long season for the Red Wings. Their failure to capitalize on power plays, sloppy stick work and an injury list means that a great start may be getting rougher.

University of Vermont Women's Hockey Team has an interesting victory song choice...

Not my first choice, or top 100 but they sound pretty enthusiastic so glad it works for them. (y)
