I read their political and economic articles because they are fairly refreshing(their orthodox Marxists and so usually have something at least semi insightful to say), wherein their defense of Polanski is political, they seem to not really see anything fundamentally wrong with what he did.

Not that they would ever admit that.

Let's not give them any more credit than they deserve here; the people defending Polanski are not just defending a pedophile, they're defending a child rapist. Roman Polanski isn't in trouble because they caught him in possession of child porn, or something like that; he drugged a 13-year-old girl, and then had sex with her. There is no defending that, period.

They basically like him, because he does films that suit their Trotskyite artistic pretensions of opposition to state and society. But fundamentally I do not believe they see his actions as really bad.

Being as they are Trots, and you know orthodox marxists. Sexual crimes are in their view-small matters. Not that they would ever admit, "we don't think child rape is really bad", they just kind of half insinuate it, and say its the USG is persecuting him because...he criticizes society in a way they like?
