The Buggles song "Video Killed The Radio Star" got me thinking ... what came before?

I've known about Le voyage dans la lune for quite some time but had never watched it with Princess. She confusedly said "Those girls actually wore that?!?"

It was filmed in 1902 and that's the color version. It's the first sci-fi film, pionereed special effects, the frames were hand painted, and it included a whole bunch of women wearing hot pants ... in 1902.

Battleship Potemkin is a good movie. Unapologetically propaganda, but a good movie.

Another film I should mention is Nosferatu, although from what I've heard, its pacing is way different from the pacing in current movies(even the non-action ones).

The Jazz Singer (1927) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1930).

I'd post links but they apparently aren't yet public domain and another remake of All Quiet is set for release in October.

The Jazz Singer was the first "talkie" and features Al Jolson in Vaudeville blackface. It's also one of the first ones where the main character is black even though the actor wasn't.

All Quiet was the first war movie which somewhat accurately depicted the horrors of war and was banned by Nazi Germany pretty much instantly.
