Obscure but amazing space opera books

We all know the big names in science fiction. Ian Banks. Vernor Vinge. Alistair Reynolds. Peter Hamilton. Stephen Baxter. John Scalzi. Then there are the oldies - Arthur Clark, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, Paul Anderson, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert. The list of prominent space scifi authors goes on and on. Each one have had at least several books or short stories that fascinated us, left their marks in our hearts and minds, and won countless awards (and then there are shitstains like David Weber that only plebs like, but... ahem... I digress).

But occasionally one encounters a hidden gem among the sea of fiction that is relatively unknown and unacknowledged.

Here's my offering: The Forbidden Borders trilogy by Michael Gear. The first book is Requiem for the Conqueror. I've read the first two in the series many, many years ago, they're like Game of Thrones in space and nobody seems to know they exist.

So go ahead, show us what eldritch secrets you discovered when you swerved off the commercial hyperspace lanes and plunged deep into the void between the suns.
