Larry King was a famous news interviewer who had been working in the news business, particularly interviews, for over sixty years, since he started as a radio disc jockey in 1957 at a small radio station located in Miami Beach, Florida. His first interview was with a waiter at a local restaurant. In his early career he was also a comedian, wrote newspaper columns and even became a color commentator for National Football League team the Miami Dolphins as well as being arrested after a false charge of grand larceny.
It took him over twenty years to reach national audiences when he inherited a coast-to-coast radio talk show host slot in 1978. But it was in 1985 when he started at CNN that he started the most famous phase of his career. For twenty five years he worked for CNN as the host of Larry King Live. He was known for his direct, open ended questions that were non-confrontational and giving the guest plenty of time to speak. He also took in live phone calls during the show, replicating that important element common in talk radio. It's estimated he interviewed over 30,000 people in his entire career.
In 2010 his run on CNN ended and in 2012 he co-founded Ora.TV and hosted over a hundred episodes of Larry King Now with that network. He was married eight times to seven different women with whom he had five children (and nine grand children and four great-grandchildren) Larry King also suffered his first heart attack in 1987. His occassional medical problems, along with his overall appearance and the fact he didn't seem capable of aging, helped bring about the rise of many jokes and memes about how he was incapable of dying and other humor along those lines.
However he did pass away at the age of 87.
