EU Jurgen Conings: Belgian Chris Dorner steals guns, leaves anti-lockdown manifesto...inspires support!?

Utterly absurd story ongoing in Belgium that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned here:

A well-trained sniper from the Belgian army, Jurgen Conings,
Uh-oh.
who has combat experience in several war zones including Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon,
Uh-oh!
disappeared on Monday. Having reportedly left life-threatening notes to several top officials, the 46-year-old man is believed to have taken several anti-tank missiles, a submachine gun and a handgun with an ability to pierce bulletproof vests from his unit’s ammunition depot. He himself is believed to be wearing the vest.
Uh-oh!
Conings’ girlfriend, Gwendy, is reported to be the one who alerted the authorities to her partner’s disappearance on Monday. She reportedly discovered several letters left behind, with local media quoting Conings as writing he “could no longer live in a society where politicians and virologists have taken everything away from us,” so he “would join the resistance and would not surrender.”
...
The trained soldier also reportedly made threatening notes to the country’s Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder who is now under extra protection, VRT reported. “You trained me to become who I am, I am now going to use that against you,”
So now we see what the system fears the most in totality. Not those who become radicalized after leaving the military, but those who desert on the job with access to weapons. Furthermore when they have a narrow list of targets consisting of people at the top, not randos at the bottom. I'm 50/50 on whether those letters were a moment of weakness or calculated to reach the news and incite panic.
So of course, Belgians would react to this turn of events with revulsion, right?
No, in fact, the man has inspired marches in support of him.

Alternatively, here Politico.eu attempts to rationalize the current upswell of support by pinning it to the dreaded far-right Flemish parties:

Politicians and opinion leaders erupted in outrage. Where did this support for an extreme-right terrorist come from?
But take a step back and the support for Conings, together with rising approval for the far-right Vlaams Belang party, is exposing a crucial faultline in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium, where more than 40 percent of people want to loosen ties with the poorer, French-speaking south.
For some of the Flemish right-wingers, Conings’ case epitomizes broader complaints about the exclusion from government of the Flemish right-wing nationalist movement (of which Conings had been a member). Conings, who said in his goodbye letter that he could no longer live “with the lies of people who then decide how we should live,” is suddenly morphing into an emblem of deeper Flemish discontent and alienation.

But then the plot thickens. It's true that a car of his containing the AT launchers he stole was discovered, but Vice claims that getting caught was in fact part of his plan.

Jurgen Conings went missing a week ago, leading to a huge manhunt centred on a national park close to where investigators located an abandoned car and weapons cache. With Conings nowhere to be found, investigators have now concluded that the car and abandoned weapons were a ruse intended to distract law enforcement.
“We have looked for nearly a week with the tactical teams and found no real sign that he has ever been hiding in the park,” said a Belgian police official, who cannot be named talking about a national security manhunt involving multiple nations.
“There is great concern that his car was intended to be found along with the rockets making all the effort focus on that area,” said the official. “But the rockets were training rockets that cannot fire, he clearly stole them to use as a distraction, knowing that the public would call immediately if they saw rockets.”

Given the man is supposedly going after specific politicians all he really needs is small arms rather than heavy launchers and ammo that just weigh him down.

The current cope from authorities is that he's killed himself.

“I have no evidence to suggest that Conings is deceased,” Wenke Roggen, the federal prosecutor’s spokeswoman, said. “But the more time that passes, the more we have to take into account the possibility that he is no longer alive.”

Perhaps this just intended to calm the population. The man has training and experience in specops so he must know how to survive in conditions like this. Perhaps he also understands the media attention span cycle.

IIRC the American version also "corrected" a "typesetting error" on page 42.
