Indiana Jones and the Septuagenarian Actor

Apparently, another Indiana Jones film is in the early stages of work--as in, they're apparently still working on a script and the other 'basics' (and tossing it between various writers), and it could still get put on hold and what-not because it's not filming--but it's been in the works since last October. This...rather shocks me.

In any case, apparently the 'plan' thus far, as told by Kathleen Kennedy of Star Wars producorial...infamy?...Is to see Ford return as the character once again and there's a release date of summer 2021.

This comes as a bit of a surprise and shock, of course, because Harrison Ford is 77 years old and the last Indiana Jones movie came out in 1989--THIRTY years ago. In addition, how Disney's Lucasfilm legacy-division handles another franchise entry after the...mixed...responses to the Star Wars entries seems like a worthy question to ask...Alongside the simple one of how script accounts for Ford's added age.
Unless they go the digital reaging route. *discomfort*

Nonetheless, it could be exciting to see Indiana Jones back on the big screen, right? Even if 'Last Crusade' did feel like a pretty good bookend to the series, it seems like there's room there for a more firm 'ending' to the series in a fourth installment, right? Right?
Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself because it's worrisome. Not to mention 'MOAR Sequels!' is a bit groan-inducing in terms of trend--even when they're good sequels, and the modern Disney track-record with these things under Kennedy isn't exactly great. But, much more of that probably depends on script and director choices that aren't solid yet, so hope springs eternal!

I see what you did there.

They just need to pair up Harrison Ford with some younger, more bankable actor with name recognition who has proven to of been able to work with developing film franchises long term. Someone who has enough talent and wit to realize the only way their career and marketability could be sabotaged is by themselves through engaging in increasingly erratic behavior and the like...

Or give the role to Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Indiana can be a girls name too I'm sure.

Am I the only one who doesn’t actually dislike the Crystal Skull?

Anyway, yeah Harrison Ford is getting up there in years.

I’m sure I’ll see it, but I can’t believe he wants to keep doing this.

It was average at best compared to the original three.

My biggest problems where that they went Aliens instead of magic. All the others used unexplained magic so having it trun into Sci-Fi just felt wrong. Also while I liked Holes and Even Sevens there is a reason that movies like Eagle Eye are forgotten about. Shia Labeouf was an o.k. kid comedy actor but little more. He is not an action star and it shows in movies like the Crystal Skull or even the Transfromor movies.

I do like that they tried to set up the a successor to Indiana. They did a decent job of paying homage to the older movies even if they over used some of the jokes. They also understood that Harrsion Ford should be playing the aging action hero instead of a young action hero.

So overall I was fairly disappointed with the movie but I don't hate it. I am also glad they have not tried to launch Labeouf as the new Indiana Jones like they planned at the end of the movie.

As to the new one the biggest question is what about the Crystal Skull. They have to pick a new Indiana Jones but they can't use his son. They also have to deal with the fact that Aliens and Magic both exist.

At this point I think casting a young action star to play the new lead is the way to go. Maybe do something like the New Tomb Raider games did. Have a young student look into a legend as their frist big thing. They get pointed to this old teacher at a small school that use to be a big name. Cue a Adventure coming with the student finding out some of the things hidden the world at large.

Indiana Jones is based on old 1930s pulp. Thus you can have both I think. Also it was said they were "interdimensional beings" not "spacemen".

That is splitting hairs mainly. It was super tech posing as magic which I personally didn't like in the Indiana Jones setting.

The other movies set up that magic was fearsome and rare. It was unexplainable and something that came with a cost. By making tech that could be reproduced or master by a human I feel that it loses something.

Does anyone think the next movie will even acknowledge what happened in the Crystal Skull? I could see them either recasting Shia Labeouf's character, or pretending he never existed; but I can't see them asking him back to reprise the role.

I think so unlike Ghostbusters the Crystal Skull was part of the original trilogy.

So the new Ghostbuster coming out can bypass the 2016 and go back to the frist two movies.

I doubt it will be as easy to do with Indiana Jones because they already share a Universe. It also helps that while not great the Crystal Skull is a much better moive then 2016 Ghostbusters and they did not piss off their core fanbase.

Maybe Shia can stab Harrison Ford's character to death after a heartfelt confrontation. The best way to transition a franchise to the future is to kill the past after all and subvert ones expectations.

Just make sure that Shia knows this is just for a movie... we don't need him axe murdering anymore people IRL.

I really don't get why people didn't like the aliens. Or cold war setting.

I personally didn't mind TKCS.

For me I Do not find the Cold War setting even if I would have liked one during the war because that has a lot of potential. But doing a post WWII setting is the only way 6ou can still have Harrsion Ford be Indiana Jones.

As for the Aliens. It felt out of place with 5he rest of the movies. All the other movies use ancient magic that is hidden from the world. The6 also focused on Telgious artifacts. The Crystal Skull did the old advanced technology looks like magic. While not bad when done right I just feel that it didn't belong in the Indiana Jones Universe. I would have preferred something along 6he lines of the original movies with a mysterious artifact that does amazing things. Instead we got Aliens posing as good with technology instead of magic.

I’ve read Pulp fiction before

Magic and Science can sorta coexist in the same universe

The titular Elephant in Conan The Cimmerian’s The Tower of The Elephant was a sort of extremely ancient extra dimensional alien....it also knew and taught magic and got enslaved by a human who used black magic

I didn't really mind the alien crystals subplot in the latest Indian Jones movie. And it was a fun movie to watch the one time I watched it. It just seemed... lazier and more shallow then the previous escapades.

It just felt empty.

And in Raiders of the Lost Ark you had a similar scene but lower key of that whole truck affair. You go from Chicago, to Nepal, to Egypt and then the U-Boat journey to the island and the entire story is very tight and doesn't seem bloated and people banter substantively.

Like in The Last Crusade you had that entire piece where Indiana Jones and his pals take on an entire Nazi convoy en route to the ruins. But leading up to that was the forays in Nazi Germany and the Nazi camp and the snakes and everything.

Here some Soviets end up in Hangar 51, there's some stuff happening in a nearby city, then your already in the Amazon. I honestly can barely recollect anything about that movie except the motorcycle fight/chase thing and then seeing a Soviet Killdozer mulching its way through the Amazon in some silly fashion followed by a single fight with ants... then ending up in the Crystal Skull temple or something.

It's supposed to be a fun adventure movie but I feel they cut out a lot of the heart of the actual adventure... it was fun to watch once... but there's nothing memorable that would make me want to see it again.
