China Hong Kong/China Thread

Ultimately Hong Kong is screwed. The PRC can not allow it to get away with defying the central government and will prioritise state unity over anything else.

Regardless of what Beijing does, no one outside China is going to interfere directly. At least not on the kind of level that could potentially change things. No one is going to go to war to protect Hong Kong from Beijing.

Of course, the economic consequences of the CCP suppressing Hong Kong are going to destroy the Chinese economy and probably throw them into a fairly severe depression.

Tiananmen Square 2.0 covered live and in color via social media is going to make it a PR death sentence for any of the US firms to put the Made in China label on anything. You think that Samsung, for example, isn't going to astroturf a PR campaign where buying an iPhone is tarred as tantamount to supporting Chinese massacres?
I would not be surprised though if Apple counters with accusing Samsung of being racist; as that seems to be the go-to tactic for those who want to either defend, or ignore, the actions of mainland China's government. Accuse anyone who points them out, of being racist against the Chinese people.

Living under Mao has gifted the Chinese with an amazing ability to spot hipocracy and use it to their advantage.

HK's only hope lies in the very squishy and not really known hold it has on the trust of the Chinese Financial System. I can't really guess how much stock the chinese higher-ups put into that trust and I don't really think they can articulate it to the people pointing the tanks if they do.

Best thing for the average cantonese to do at the moment is go on a vacation, hitch a ride on a container ship would be what I'd do. Nice passenger cabins on those and might dump you in a westernized nation just in time for you to claim refugee status.

A well-defined sense of cynical, sarcastic euphemism is a marked trait of surviving an upbringing in a communist regime.

Yeah, plus even with an economy that’s basically got loads of government-crony capitalism, these guys are way more capitalistic, social darwinistic, competitive and logical on an individual basis than much of the Western Left

I know you guys think he's kidding but I know professors who keep copies of maos little red book and consider them their prized possessions.

And no their not chinese.

Merciful Mother, what were you studying?

Yup.

There's a reason all Hong Kongers who can have passports of nations outside China.

Also, Trump would use it as trade war leverage. Xi is in trouble on two fronts with this and Trump would be all too happy to swing a ball peen hammer at them.

Why? Why not just also generally oppressed groups? Why not anyone who is in danger of being murdered by their own government, why only just 'our' enemies?

"Pragmatism" or basically, "our enemies" will end up having to deal with in the future, how so many of the escaped "rebels" are going to influence the nations they fled to in order to come back themselves or their own descendants and associates to "attack"

You would be able to tell how much they'd HATE the very idea of stuff like Communism ever being enforced in the nations they now live, may even come to HATE hipsters.....I want their stupid beards shaved

Because being a citizen is an act of bond, affiliation, loyalty, courage, duty. You owe your country great sacrifice to be its citizen, just as the country owes you support, community, liberty, health. A society is an organic whole, a living thing. Montagnards have suffered for their loyalty as American allies, which means they are halfway to being citizens already. The same thing with Contra villages in Nicaragua, Kurds and Christians in Iraq that provided so many translators and other local advisors in our wars there. I consider it a pathetic and evil abrogation of our duties as a nation that we have not properly honoured their loyalty. I would take a million of them before I took a single one of those cowardly twenty-something boys running away from Syria instead of fighting for the liberty of their homeland when they are at the fit and ready age for deeds of valour.

Refugee status isn't citizenship though.

Er, what sacrifice do I owe my country? I am a citizen just by being here, I haven't sacrificed shit.

Your life. You owe your country your life, if she calls you. To work, or to die, it doesn’t matter. Ideally that is a call never made.
The same country that spied on me? That tried to manipulate what I think, and what I do? That embraced corporations over its citizens? That murdered innocents, including children? Yeah no; my life is worth more than that. I'll not throw it away for a duty that is one-sided. The only thing I owe this country is taxes, as well as a piece of my mind on what constitutes ethical behavior for a government.
