Now for the serious bit, me I have not played a GTA since Vice City, which was only slightly better than 3 IMHO.
Yeah, nearly everyone agrees that San Andreas, IV, and V are better than 3 and Vice City.

There's mostly debate among which of San Andreas, IV, and V is best. Long time fans seem pretty divided on the issue.

You should really play the newer GTAs.

I tend to think of Vice City being significantly better then GTA III to be honest. But I'd agree at least in the scale of the open world environment San Andreas and the subsequent games were a big step up. Narratively I think Vice City was still a pretty solid game. I don't even remember much of GTA IV and what was going on with it beyond what I remember from the trailers lol. "I AM THE ONE WHO SURVIVED!"

EDIT:

This is surreal, I'm reading the wikipedia entry on GTA IV and I'm being told it's one of the greatest games of all time including narratively. Oh man... I'm having some sort of cognitive dissonance right now. I swear I've seen people talk about San Andreas and even Vice City significantly more then GTA IV. Maybe I'm an outlier lol.

No... Of course not.

BUT IT WILL HAVE THE BIGGEST OPEN WORLD YET!
You see that is the problem. I want a fun game. I want a nice big open world with plenty to do. I want fun side missions where if you complete the chain you get a perk or cheat. GTA SA let you be fireproof if you reached level 10 on firetruck.

I want things I can also refuse to do as well. Like no dance competitions.

Shoot I would settle for a game set in the 40's where you are starting off as a mob associate and rise to the rank of Don of the city. I have fond memories of Godfather the Game.

Is that wrong? Is it bad I just want a crime simulation game where you can go in loud and proud and win but if you also use your head you still win?

The Yakuza games are packed full of content in a small world. To some degree Baldur's Gate 3 also has this mentality and it expands on the hub maps with verticality of enviroments.

The only somewhat decent open worlds are Far Cry 2 but that's because of the realism it was back then.

Witcher 3 is also big and hublike but has content.

Apparently (to the surprise of no one) the Great Theft Auto Trilogy will be released later this year with sexy new modern enhancements.

And sadly, this trilogy isn't including the original top down madness of the first two Grand Theft Auto games that I know all of you were demanding, but are actually the open world games Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas.

Perhaps controversially... this also means that Rockstar Games will be removing the original three games from their various digital storefronts startings October 11th. It's being theorized that the games will be released on October 22nd, the 20th Anniversary of the release of Grand Theft Auto 3. Feeling old yet?
They're still having Grand Theft Auto videogames? I'm surprised they still exist.
