Doubly so since they did serve the country in the Mexican war prior to the war of northern aggression, many of them became heroes. Hell, Lee himself was offered command of the Union's army. Not honoring that is spitting in the face of anyone who serves.

Guiseppe Garibaldi, he of Italian redshirt fame, was also offered Union command by Lincoln - corps, not army - and said "no" because he felt insulted. If I need a mid-19th century general I'll take Garibaldi over any Confederate general except for maybe Hardee because Hardee literally wrote the book on the tactics American infantry of the period used.

People just wat to cry out because of the past, bur if you point out something that shows they arnt evil, or that everyone at the time was racist, they ignore you
I don't think they were evil. They were just misguided fools.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was an illiterate and very racist redneck slave owner who was also a very good cavalry commander, founded the KKK, and IMHO, somewhat redeemed himself when he took out a full-page ad in a Memphis newspaper telling the KKK to "knock that shit off" and disavowing the KKK because he felt they'd gone way past the bounds of acceptable behavior.

Some where evil. Some were not. In the end, it was a different time and we should not put modern morales into that time

Said elsewhere, Southern Unionists and/or escaped slaves are the best choices for renaming.

That way the South can celebrate parts of its history worth honoring.
I would rather we go the troll route and name the based after people with the same last name or Southern music stars which the liberals hate Fort 'Charlie Daniels' is far too good of thing to pass up.

I don't like the based after people with the same last name thing, in my experience it tends to enable revision of what the original name was.

To each his own I am just choosing what will spite the left most and actually has a chance at winning so either people with the same last name or people the left hate IE country music singers.

Pretty much the only way you could possibly out-troll everyone is by naming it "Fort Bunker". Chang and Eng Bunker were Siamese twins*, married a pair Southern sisters, and owned slaves. I would be amazed if no Union soldier had Bunker as a surname.

* They're why cojoined twins are called Siamese twins.
