Election of 1885.
President Garfield defeats Grover Cleaveland 44% to 33%

Garfield won't defeat Cleveland by double-digits. However, he might very well defeat Cleveland since he was more honest (or at least perceived as being more honest) than Blaine was, which could be enough to push New York in his direction considering that Blaine lost it by just 0.10%, or slightly over 1,000 votes.

I suspect that (unfortunately) Garfield will approve of Chinese Exclusion in some form both because the 1880 GOP presidential platform supported Chinese Exclusion and also because James G. Blaine did and Blaine was Garfield's Secretary of State and AFAIK had a lot of influence on Garfield.

The Republicans likely nominate Blaine in 1888 in this scenario. As for the Democrats, they either renominate Cleveland in 1888 or nominate someone else, such as David B. Hill, that year.
