I once saw somebody genuinely argue this - "Communism isn't bad, it's just that paranoid psychopaths keep hijacking it". Which is simply yet another argument against it.

To be totally fair, Absolute Monarchy tends to work exceedingly well when a benevolent, military strong King or Queen is in charge. It also sucks when a shitty King or Queen is in charge.

Communism, like most forms of government, only works when good people are at the helm.

You are, 100% correct. This is an extreme flaw of the systems if they can be so easily ruined. Democracy as the US practices is able to survive a few bad rulers and keep going, therefore making it a superior system.

No even with good people in charge Communism ends up going wrong.

Let me explain why.

How many windsheild wipers does a car need? Your anser was probally something like two. The Soviet union thought the same thing. And it ended up creating a windsheild wiper shortage because they didnt acount for faulty wipers, replacements and numerous other issues. So when ran came russian traffic would stop as every one got out of the car and put their wipers in.

An economy is an incredibly complex thing, its pure arrogance to think that any one person or one buracracy or one company can successfully mangage an entire economy. Thats why markets are better it takes the complex problem of resource allocation and splits it into managable chunks with plenty of redundancy in case some thing fucks up.

Command economies cant do that.

...I'm so going to use that in a story I'm writing.

Again, to be fair, that's the Russians. The only thing they do right is voldka, soft drinks, memes, and supermodels and even those things are debatable.

They seem to be passably competent with building things like tanks, helicopters, machine-guns, rockets...

Sshhhuuuush, we are talking culture, not Military. If we were using military as the measure of which form of government works best, it would be even less of a debate than what it already is.

Pretty sure you can find similar things in various communist countries like China, Vietnam and North Korea BEST KOREA!1! as well.

Eh, sure. I guess.
