Interesting thing: monarchists are a significant(not a majority, not even a plurality - more than enough to be noticed, though) part of the 'conservative' block in Brazil. However, every once in a while I see people that look, not to the Empire, but to the colonial times(and here I'd say they look specifically to the pre-Marquis of Pombal times) as a model. I expect this group to grow(slowly) in the near future. After that? Who knows.

P.S in Poland we have leftist nevspaper named "Gazeta Wyborcza" which lie funny - for example,when there was referendum in Brasil to restore monarchy and 16% people supported it,they joked how weak monarchists are.
Fun thing is,that party supported by them in Poland get 13% - and it was big success!

You misunderstand: monarchists don't hate Pombal. How could they? The Brazilian Empire was built by people educated at Coimbra's Law Faculty, which curriculum had been extensively reformed by Pombal; the State they created was founded on Pombalist ideas.
Also, most of the ruling class of the Empire was part of the Freemasons, especially during D.Pedro II's reign. D.Pedro II himself is commonly considered to have been a high-ranking member(Wikipedia denies that, but the pages on the Imperial Family there tend to have an extremely charitable interpretation of their members - I am certain those pages were edited by Brazilian monarchists). One of the conspiracy theories around the Proclamation of the Republic(which I think there's a exceptionally high chance of being true) is the Freemasons fully supported and egged on the pro-Republic faction in the military because D.Pedro II was not long for this world and his daughter was an Ultramontane Catholic.

Not that I trust anybody in the trial, they all seem like terrible people except for the poor dude she framed.
Well at least there were some actual consequences for her over it. So many in this country have gotten away with it. Just as an example, I could be wrong, but I don't think "mattress girl" ever faced any legal consequences for claiming the guy she wanted to go steady with raped her after he turned her down.

Not enough details to be understandable.
If I had to build a narrative in a book to explain this sequence of events, it might go like this:
Girl went on a date, he roughed her up.
Neighbor/family member noticed and brought the obviously sexual injuries to the attention of the police.
Girl worried she'd be ostracized/called racist by her peers if she said it was the immigrant. However, she also couldn't just say it didn't happen.
She decided to point the finger at some random white guy, which would also get her personal sympathy/victimization points with her peer group.
Note this is entirely guesswork on my part as, again, we have no idea what her thinking really was and we don't have enough information to go on. She could also have been doing it as revenge against the innocent man for some conceived slight, or it could be that the sex happened when she was so drunk and/or stoned out of her mind that she genuinely had no idea who she slept with and fingered the guy she'd had a dream about.
