Way back in October of 2019, FedEx, the US based logistics company, requested a certificate to install a directed infrared laser energy based anti-missile system upon some of its aircraft to the FAA. Presumably this is to defend their aircraft from the potential threat of MANPAD's.

It is not unreasonable to assume they might have some logistics contracts with the US military That or they do some shipping into Israel and there have been enoguh scares coming from Gazza to make spending a few million on lazers worth it.

Would flare dispensers make more sense?

Or is FedEx diversifying into the defense industry?

Not that I blame them for wanting a cut of that extra-rare, super juicy military-industrial complex steak.
