Movies Favorite Movies Year by Year

So something I recently saw on Social Media are people listing their favorite movies year-by-year and going back to whenever. It seemed like a more fun exercise then just rattling off top movies or whatever or top movies by genre so I figured we could do something similar.

I'll try and stop at the year 2010 and... see if I can remember a film that came out in those times without too much Wikisurfing.

2021: Spider-man: No Way Home.
Runner up would be Dune. The only Competition Here was Dune and... I liked Dune a lot but... I found Spider-man: No Way Home more entertaining.

2020: Tenet.
I will always admire Christopher Nolan for even when his films kinda feel like they short of his vision, he's at least trying something new and original with everything. In a time of a lot of entertaining 'product entertainment' his film was pretty clever and I think I was able to follow most of it.

2019: Uncut Gems 1917
Runner Up would be Avengers: Endgame. I'm contradicting myself over entertainment versus quality and I'll do it again and again but honestly, I don't even think Avengers Endgame was my favorite Avengers Phase Three Movie. Also Joker came out this year as well and was pretty decent. But Uncut Gems... Holy F*** was that movie intense.

2018: Avengers: Infinity War.
Runner up would be The Ballad of Buster Scruggs which is an anthology Western film so it might be kind of cheating since its multiple short films in one.

2017: Logan
A character you've been following onscreen for like a dozen movies, a hundred plus kills and almost two decades passing on with a quote from the film Shane made me cry. I hate it when movies make me cry. I love this movie. Dunkirk also came out this year. As did Blade Runner 2049 and of course... Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

2016: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Disney Star Wars making one solidly good movie out of the five released... maybe that makes it stand out more. AT-ST's! AT-ST's! TIE FIGHTERS! STAR DESTROYERS! DO YOU REMEMBER X-WINGS? IT BROKE NEW GROUND!

2015: The Revenant
Leonardo DiCaprio gets raped by a bear! The Martian came out this year as well. I uhhh never saw it.

2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Sorry Interstellar.

2013: Snowpiercer
Whew... good thing I saw that movie came out this year. I was about to give it to Riddick. Needless to say... this list may require some refinements because I'm looking at theatrical releases.

2012: The Avengers
I'm told other movies came out this year as well. None were given consideration. (Silver Linings Playbook Was A Superior Film)

2011: Drive
Definitely more entertaining then The Help though I'm still hoping for a crossover. But seriously if you haven't seen Drive, see it. It's... unique.

2010: Inception or Black Swan? Inception or Black Swan? Maybe Shutter Island? I really liked The Book of Eli as well. Or the True Grit remake. I chose... The Expendables. I will be taking no questions.

2009: District 9
It was a tough choice between this and Up but ultimately I went with District 9. I can't say enough about how good Up is but District 9 I guess was a bit more interesting to me with its concept and style even if Up actually had more emotional resonance.

2008: The Wrestler
Initially I was debating if this was going to be between Iron Man and The Dark Knight but thinking back onto The Wrestler, it wasn't as entertaining, but it was some great character driven cinema. Beautifully emotional movie and drama.

2007: There Will Be Blood
Just barely beats out No Country For Old Men. Both films were really good. My idea of "cinema."

2006: Apocalypto
So many great movies came out in 2006. Letters From Iwo Jima, Winters Bone, Blood Diamond, The Departed, The Last King of Scotland and Casino Royale. Any other year, one of those films could potentially cinch it. But Apocalypto was just so different and amazing. Brutal and beautiful and original and fresh. And "historical" in that every nerd on the internet became a Mesoamerican expert suddenly.

2005: Kingdom of Heaven
But only the Directors Cut. If not for a Directors Cut I'd probably say Batman Begins or Revenge of the Sith to be perfectly honest.

2004: Spider-man 2
Potentially the best Superhero movie of all time? Million Dollar Baby would be my runner up this year. But it was another choice between "Cinema" and "Entertainment" or whatever.

2003: The Last Samurai
Sorry Return of the King. What I saw in that final film was a portent of future Lord of the Rings media to come... and undead scrubbing bubbles.

2002: Gangs of New York
This was literally a three way tie between Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, We Were Soldiers and the aforementioned Martin Scorsese movie. I guess Scorsese's cinematic elitism wins out this year. 😛

2001: Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Epic Fantasy Come To Life.

2000: Gladiator
Only competition for me was O Brother Where Art Thou, which was a great retelling of The Odyssey but, it can't beat Gladiator.

1999: The Mummy
Lotta good random movies this year. The Mummy, The Iron Giant, Three Kings, Boys Don't Cry, Princess Mononoke, Fight Club, Run Lola Run, Ravenous, The Green Mile, The Phantom Menace, The Blair Witch Project, The Sixth Sense, and The 13th Warrior. Fun wins this time around.

1998: Saving Private Ryan

1997: LA Confidential
Honorable Mentions go to Gattaca, Seven Years in Tibet & Good Will Hunting.

1996: Sling Blade
Ah Yup...

1995: Casino
Heat
was pretty good though.

1994: Legends of the Fall
Edward Zwick directs some really great movies.

1993: Falling Down
I am so sorry to Gettysburg.

1992: A River Runs Through It

1991: Terminator 2: Judgment Day

1990: Total Recall
I really should've said Goodfellas but everytime I try to write it down as my best movie, it spells out Total Recall. Weird.

1989: Glory
Fantastic war movie and American Civil War movie. Directed by Edward Zwick who I think has directed some of my other faves (I'm assuming). Breakout role for Denzel Washington as well. Might be one of my most favorite movies of all time tbh.

1988: Bloodsport
If I had been a Woman of Culture I would've said The Last Emperor, Mississippi Burning or Die Hard. But Bloodsport is one of the greatest martial arts movies of all time, it just feels weird not having it be the movie of the year.

1987: Robocop
It's a near perfect movie for what it is. Which is saying something because so was Predator which came out in the same year.

1986: Platoon
The Peter the Great miniseries (starring Maximillian Schell) came out this year but I guess that doesnt count. If it did, it would be here instead.

1985: The Color Purple
Deathwish III
is a close second. These two movies are basically interchangeable though and I've seen Deathwish III way more times so whose to really say?

1984: The Terminator
The Terminator
, The Killing Fields and Red Dawn all came out this year and all tell the same basic story, tales of heroic survival and resistance against foreign communist invaders. Choosing between these three films is like choosing between which kids to leave behind as you flee the apocalypse. It's a hard choice, but unless your @Rusty Shackleford it's not really that hard, especially if they aren't your kids. The Terminator wins because it was also quite the technical achievement.

1983: WarGames
It's weird... because I literally just saw this movie not too long ago for the first time. No really.

1982: Conan the Barbarian
Again like with my 1984-85 picks, between this and Gandhi it's basically the same plot with very similar protaganists.

1981: Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

1980: The Empire Strikes Back
The Gods Must Be Crazy
was a good runner up as well.

Actually no... I'm going to keep going to 1977 to prove a point to a certain someone who posted before me that shall remain nameless.

1979: Apocalypse Now

1978: Deer Hunter
Look at that, two feel good movies in a row!

1977: A Bridge Too Far
Wow... that was easy. Imagine thinking Burt Reynolds hairy chest or some lame flying chandelier that can make music would contest one of the greatest war movies and the greatest space opera of all time.

Below is a list of the stuff I enjoyed the most each year, which isn't necessarily the same as what is technically the "best", of course. Anyway, I've tried to stick to one per year, but sometimes, I really can't choose. (EDIT: I've also selected a non-exhaustive list of runner-ups, because I just can't help myself.)

----------------------------------------------------------------

2021: Dune

2020: Sonic the Hedgehog

2019: 1917

2018: Deadpool 2

2017: Blade Runner 2049
(runner-ups include Logan and The Death of Stalin)

2016: Arrival
(and Deadpool is demoted to runner-up)

2015: The Martian /// Sicario
(and Steve Jobs is a runner-up)

2014: Kingsman: The Secret Service
(and Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a runner-up)

2013: Pacific Rim

2012: (worst year of my life, I recall nothing good happening that year)

2011: Drive
(a good runner-up is the director's cut of Gods and Generals, a film that was theatrically released in 2003)

2010: Red /// How to Train Your Dragon

2009: Up

2008: Gran Torino
(runner-ups include Iron Man and Tropic Thunder)

2007: Hot Fuzz
(with No Country For Old Men as the runner-up)

2006: A Good Year /// Happy Feet /// Apocalypto /// Flags of Our Fathers /// Letters from Iwo Jima.

2005: Serenity /// Lord of War /// Kingdom of Heaven (Director’s Cut)

(with Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow as the runner-up)

2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
(runner-ups include The Last Samurai and Big Fish)

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
(with We Were Soldiers as the runner-up)

2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
(with The Mummy Returns as the runner-up)

2000: Gladiator /// O Brother, Where Art Thou? /// Snatch
(and I suppose American Psycho makes a decent runner-up)

1939 - The Adventures of Robin Hood
I liked the aesthetics and the acting is good. Some iconic scenes like the lords trying to seduce Robin to their side and Robin by himself being the last loyal holdout of the king, or the scene where the king reveals himself.

1939 - Gone with the Wind
Aesthetically good but was a slog to watch.

1940 - Fantasia
Great art and animation.

1942 - Casablanca

1944 - Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo

1946 - Song of the South

1948 - Red River (probably the only movie besides the Searchers in which John Wayne plays a somewhat likeable character. Good ending)

1950 - Rio Grande (wasn't anything to write home about)

1952 - Ikiru

1953 - Roman Holiday

1955 - Richard III (was kinda meh tbh)

1956 - The Searchers (the other movie in which John Wayne was likeable, also good ending).

1957 - Paths of Glory (an unusually good anti-war film that doesn't resort to showing lots of violence and the heroes making sad faces. Is instead about how the rank and file got fucked over for nothing by the politicking of their generals).

1958 - Run Silent Run Deep

1960 - Swiss Family Robinson

1961 - The Guns of Navarone (a small band of heroes go on a long journey behind enemy lines to blow up huge guns that prevent an invasion of Italy).

1962 - To Kill a Mockingbird

1964 - Seven Days in May

1965 - Shenandoah

1968 - Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

1971 - Willy Wonka and the Choclate Factory

1975 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail (overrated)

1977 - Star Wars IV A New Hope

1978 - Go Tell the Spartans

1979 - Lupin III the Castle of Cagliostro

1980 - Star Wars V The Empire Strikes Back

1981 - Excalibur (great scene where Arthur is knighted)

1982 - Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan

1983 - Star Wars VI The Return of the Jedi

1984 - Amadeus

1985 - Ran

1986 - It's a tie between Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Castle in the Sky, and Highlander.

1987 - Wings of Honneamise (it was okay)

1988 - Die Hard

1989 - Weekend at Bernie's (comedy about two guys who accidentally killed a high ranking criminal and cart his dead body around at a party, puppeteering it and pretending he's alive).

1990 - The Hunt for Red October

1991 - Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country

1992 - A Few Good Men

1993 - Jurassic Park

1994 - The Pagemaster

1995 - Heat

1996 - Independence Day

1997 - Princess Mononoke (I think Ghibli movies don't have very compelling stories, but on a technical level the art, animation, and music is top notch, and the war and the medieval Japan aesthetics of this movie really appealed to me).

1998 - Prince of Egypt

1999 - tie between Star Wars I The Phantom Menace and Toy Story 2

2000 - Pokemon 3 Spell of the Unknown (the one and only Pokemon movie that is legitimately great. You can watch it even if you don't know anything about Pokemon. Fantastic art direction too).

2001 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

2002 - Spiderman

2003 - tie between Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean

2004 - Spiderman 2

2005 - Batman Begins

2006 - The Prestige

2007 - 5 Centimeters Per Second

2009 - tie between Avatar and Up

2010 - How to Train Your Dragon

2012 - The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey

2013 - Pacific Rim

2014 - John Wick

2015 - Mad Max Fury Road

2016 - Silence

2017 - John Wick 2

2018 - Weathering With You

2019-2022 there were no movies I enjoyed. I guess Gundam Hathaway was a 5/10...

2020: Tenet.
I will always admire Christopher Nolan for even when his films kinda feel like they short of his vision, he's at least trying something new and original with everything. In a time of a lot of entertaining 'product entertainment' his film was pretty clever and I think I was able to follow most of it.

I felt it was kinda hard to care about anything going on in Tenet. I didn't care for the main character and I didn't get why he was going to risk the world to save some lady he had barely known for a few minutes. Nolan's other standalone movies could be confusing at times but at least you were somewhat invested in what was going on.

Expanded my list down to 1990. So another twenty years of annual faves. Maybe I'll proceed farther down as time goes on.

Also thanks to @Skallagrim for reminding me that 1917 existed. So that was a new favorite that year.

It made me check when Hacksaw Ridge came out but... I think Rogue One is still my fave that year. I am a SciFi nerd ultimately as well as a War Movie Geek.

I felt it was kinda hard to care about anything going on in Tenet. I didn't care for the main character and I didn't get why he was going to risk the world to save some lady he had barely known for a few minutes. Nolan's other standalone movies could be confusing at times but at least you were somewhat invested in what was going on.

I understand that POV. It's not something I felt so I guess I got more invested in it and it really paid off for me. The Protagonist was interesting to me. I usually don't like that level of smug... but it worked for him.

I stopped at 2010 initially because I was lie "Whoa... this is kind of a big mental project for me."

2019 - 1917

2018 - Heavy Trip

2017 - The Death of Stalin

2016 - War on Everyone

2015 - Sicario

2014 - 71

2013 -Filth

2012 - The Raid

2011 - The Guard (another tough choice, this time the Hodejegerne being the competition)

2010 - Four Lions

2009 - In the Loop

2008 - Bienvenue chez le Ch'tis

2007 - Death at a Funeral

2006 - Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

2005 - The Descent

2004 - Shaun of the Dead

2003 - Second Hand Lions

2002 - Dog Soldiers

2001 - Black Hawk Down

2000 - Gladiator

1999 - In China They Eat Dogs

1998 - Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

1997 - Event Horizon

1996 - Lepa Sela Lepo Gore (how do you best encapsulate the madness and absurdity of war in BiH? You make a comedy about it)

1995 - The Heat

1994 - Leon: The Professional

1993 - Gettysburg (tough choice between it and the Stalingrad)

1992 - Braindead (I reckon ''I kick ass for the Lord'' is what won it over the Army of Darkness)

1991 - Teminator 2

1990 - Miller's Crossing

So I will start with the frist movie I really remember seeing in a theaters

1993 - Jurassic Park - frist movie I can remember seeing in a theater and have loved them all including the third one.

1994- Forest Gump- while at the time it was probably A River Runs Wild once I got old enough Forest Gump to appreciate it the movie has become one of my favorites.

1995- Ghost in the Shell - Frist anime movie I saw in a theater. Also got me into anime when before all I knew was DragonBall and 4Kids stuff. But this year was hard with stuff like Mallrats, Golden Eye, Braveheart, Hackers and many more. This year was stacked with great movies.

1996- Twister- while Independence Day is better known I have always liked Twister better especially growing up in the midwest. I would give a mention Dragonheart. A generally forgotten but still great movie.

1997- The Fifth Element- the style, acting, plot, and action make this one of my top 5 favorite movies. Even then it was a hard call with Contact, Titanic and Goodwill Hunting in the same year.

1998- Meet Joe Black- while Truman Show, Saving Private Ryan where both contenders I went with Joe Black. While a romance it has great acting and out of context problems. The ending secne at the party just makes the movie.

1999- The Mummy- the best adventure movie since Indiana Jones. Also one lf my top ten movies and probably my favorite Brandon Frasier movie. It even managed to beat out Iron Gaint.

2000- O Brother Where art Thou - I am sucker for this one. From the comedy to the sound track this movie is great. The fact thay it is a new take on the Odyssey just makes it better. While others like Castaway, Gladiator, the Perfect Strom or Titain A.E. are great to Oh Borther just beats them out.

2001- Lord of the Ring Fellowship of the Ring- This movie is a classic. From the scale going back to Golden Age of Hollywood to being one of the better book adpations I have seen. This movie was huge and loved by everyone for a reason. Even Atlantis the Lost Empire a favorite of mine could not beat it out.

2002- We Where Soldiers- a great war movie. It shows the horror of war along with the bravery and acts of courage thay Soldiers live with. It is also nice to see a Vietnam movie that is not the bleak humans suck of Full Metal Jacket.

2003- Pirate's of the Caribbean- A great action moive that brings humor, special effects, decent acting into one great movie. Kill Bill is the only movie that came close but even that fell short.

2004- The Passion- I know it gets a lot of hate but this is one of the better versions of this I have seen. I have gone to my fair share of Passion plays but this one beats them hands down.

2005- Lord of War- while Batman Begins is a normal pick Lord Of War beats it for the simple fact that as a character piece this is right below Forest Gump

2006- The Prestige- This is a great murder mystery period peice. The twists and turns keep you watching while acting and tone bri gs yku back to watch again.

2007- National Teasure- a fun adventure movie in the vein of the Mummy and Indiana Jones. It has some far out there twists but Nicholas Cage pulls them off and has great rewatch vaule.

2008- Ironman- the movie that started MCU domination for the next 15 years. Not only a comeback for RDJ but a great superhero movie that is not Superman, Batman or Spiderman. Sill one of my favorites of the MCU movies.

2009- Deathly Hollows Part one- while the ending movies are weaker then the frist ones it still tops this year. The books where good even if the switch to young adult from children books was troubled. But this is the final movies in a decade long franchise and I liked all the movies. So it makes the list here.

2010- Alice in Wonderland- Tim Burton is just what this movie needed. His flim stlye along with a strong cast makes for a great movie.

2011- The Big Year- while some decent movies like Frist Class came out this comedy movie beats them out. With Jack Black, Steve Martin, and Owen Wlison shows three charater all trying to capture something. It also has surpising decent development for its characters in a comdey.

2012- The Hunger Games- while it spawned a bunch of copycats like Divergent this was a good action movie with decent world building. While the romance was handled better in the book overall it doesn't kill the movie like it does for uts copycats. I know that the Avengers will take most people pick here and while I love the movie I think that Hunger Games has a slight lead with the fact that it is different from the normal teen movie.

2013- The Intership- A goofy movie with a decnt message. Mainly picked becasue this was the year of sequels like Ironman 3 to Wolverine. None as good as their frist movie zo I went with the fun to watch comdey.

2014- Edge of Tomorrow- one of the best time loop movies I have seen. The action scenes are well done, decent acting and a plot tbat is well thought-out. Overall a great action movie.

2015- The Martain- Castaway in space. The vidoe logs keeps the movie moving and even the China saves the day could not stop this movie from being great.

2016- Arrival- while Contact bearly missied the list Arrival did not. A great slow brun movie with charaters that drive the plot forward. Not to mention much better handled time travel then movies like Interstellar.

2017- Amercian Made- a good look at the 80's and the cold war tbough a dramatic retelling of a true story. Overall enough action, drama and fleshed out charaters to make it worth anyones time.

2018- Tomb Raider- while there is some hate for the new version of Lara I liked the games and movie. This a soild adventure movie and sadly is not likely to a see a sequel even with being one of the better vidoe game adpations I have seen.

2019- Avengers Endgame- the final movie of a world that spanned a decade of movies and T.V. shows. The humor, action(yes even the girl power scene) acting and interwoven plot lines all come together to make a great movie that everyo e is now trying to copy. Nothing even was considered for this year.

2020- Sonic the Hedgehog- the year covid hit and movies stopped coming out. But this movie did and was a surlise in a good way. An Ugly Sonic with a Jim Carry should not work but it does. Overall a strong movie geared toward kids but one thay adults will still like.

2021- Ghostbusters Afterlife- the new Ghostbusters movies that we all wanted back in 2016 and finally got five years later. Enough nods to the originals, keep while expanding world building combined with good acting and a strong plot makes this a great sequel.

2013: Snowpiercer
Whew... good thing I saw that movie came out this year. I was about to give it to Riddick. Needless to say... this list may require some refinements because I'm looking at theatrical releases.

People keep saying this movie was great but I never liked it. Overall while an interesting idea it was wasted on a genrally mindless action movie. Even the t.v show forgets about being a tiny close system. Overall I think disappointment at missed chances is mainly what I remember from Snowpiercer.

2010: Inception or Black Swan? Inception or Black Swan? Maybe Shutter Island? I really liked The Book of Eli as well. Or the True Grit remake. I chose... The Expendables. I will be taking no questions.

At least you know this movie is just like picking Sharknado. Whe I have not gone with the "Popular" best movie lf the year picks at least I didn't go Expendables bad.

A follow-up to my previous list, going a bit further back in time. It should be noted that once we get past the mid-90s, we enter the realm of films I only saw later, and not around the time of their original release. (Something that, inevitably, influences my experience of them.)

I'll stop here. We an go all the way back, but at some point, it'll just be a case of listing the "classics" that most people would mention.

Honestly such a list is hard to make because some years have movies that overachieve to the point that even some truly classic films fall into obscurity. For example, Star Wars Episode 4: A New Hope was indeed the best film of that year 'but' that year also included films in the running spots.
  • Smokey and the Bandit: A fantastic Americana-Road Outlaw film that while not sci-fi or an overachiever culturally was still good enough to launch Burt Reynolds career into the stratosphere.
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Was one of Spielberg's greatest works and pretty culturally influential although not to the point of Star Wars.
To say nothing of the ones that year that didn't dominate the box office yet would still go along to be cult classics.
  • A Bridge Too Far: One of the most well know war films there is and undoubtedly a classic.
  • The Hobbit 1977: by Rankin Bass Is easily my most favorite adaption of thee book and most faithful to the series dialogue wise with some seriously good voice actors, the only downsides could be seen as to your personal taste in the art style.
  • Race For Your Life Charlie Brown: A often overlooked Peanuts classic that definitely deserves a mention.
Thats not to take away from Star Wars merely to point out that from the heights that they achieved any film you gaze upon will undoubtedly seem puny by comparison.

Bumping this thread after Rusty Shackleford took a giant SHIT on my cinephile parade, MURDERING MY THREAD!!!:poop::poop::poop::poop:😞

But seriously... I got to at least match the other poster who covered their favorite movies of the 80's.

1989: Glory
Fantastic war movie and American Civil War movie. Directed by Edward Zwick who I think has directed some of my other faves (I'm assuming). Breakout role for Denzel Washington as well. Might be one of my most favorite movies of all time tbh.

is a close second.
