Cruise ship are more then just a trough of fatties and retirees AFAIK.
I went on one when I was a teenager. It was fun. Should give it a try. Especially if there's a place you wanna visit for (more) cheap prices.
I was planning on taking one of those North Pacific cruises for like two weeks at one time but something happened in Russia a couple years back that soured me on flying into Vladivostok or whatever the origin port would've been. And before that was the Chi Com Commie Cough of unknown origin.
My issue is not that I don't think I could enjoy it. It's that I don't want to spend my limited vacation days in a confined space with that many people.
