Went and saw D&D a couple nights ago with the kids.
We had a good time!
I didn't go in with lot of expectations, and I've been avoiding reading details and reviews.

On the characters: I think they did a good job of showing characters with all their inherent flaws. Some of it was over the top like Holga's total lack of tact, which was quite fun at some points, or the Paladin's epic attempt to be a Vulcan! Frankly, it was pretty well written in regards to the character interactions and dialogue. Frankly, it was on point with feeling like it was a group of roleplayers in a game of D&D!
In addition, I have to concur with some others that the character development was well done as well. None of the party members felt like a throw away add-in that was just there for others to use for growth.
The pacing was the only thing that felt a bit off. There were 2 or 3 scenes that felt like they went on a bit too long...the graveyard where they have to commune with a series of undead to get to the critical point was funny, but felt like it was a bit too repetetive. Thankfully, there were enough differences that it wasn't painful and it didn't force me completely out of the story.
The plot was well done. I like how they used Forge as the betrayer and didn't waste a lot of time trying to make it some sort of big reveal later in the movie. He may not have been the big baddy, but his role was not insubstantial. Characterization of the baddies was well done in this regard. Even Mrs. Red Wizard herself was interesting.
All in all, I'd probably give this one 4.5 out of 5 Stars. It was fun! It had characters that had character. And, amazingly enough for a fantasy movie (or any movie really) there were consequences to choices made. I also loved that the idea of family was so central to the story. Too many fantasy/action movies are just about the ass-kicking and getting the girl.
