Urban Fantasy Create a Setting - Urban Fantasy Stolen Fluff

One of my favorite kinds of threads on SB was setting creation threads. A collaborative effort where the participants take turns adding elements to the setting, making sure not to contradict previous plot elements. Maybe we have enough posters here to do it here too. Let's find out.

So this will be an urban fantasy setting, one where the supernatural exists secretly and the majority of humans are unaware of these creatures. We've seen plenty of settings like this before, like World of Darkness.

Here is the twist. Every kind of creature of magic in this setting must be taken from some pre-established fictional setting that isn't urban fantasy. What do I mean by this? Here is one example: the Sith and the Jedi conduct a secret war over which side of the Force will come to dominate humanity, they use their mind control powers to keep their presence a secret and cover up the sword and Force battles against each other. Another example: among some of the most powerful men in society wear special magical rings which allow them to rise to the highest levels of society - but there is another ring that controls all the others and will allow the Dark Lord Sauron to command them when he rises to power.

So, obviously, we don't need to stick too closely to the canon of these settings - but the basic ideas should form our inspiration. Once some ideas have been introduced, we can work on how the various groups interact with each other and with the modern seemingly normal world.

Let me help you out with one.

In this setting, the forces of Chaos from 40K exist as do the Chaos gods. There are numerous secret cults of Chaos hiding among the human population, some worshipping one of the 4 great gods of Chaos, some worshipping Chaos Undivided, others worshipping unaffiliated greater daemons. While some of these cultists are driven mad by their connection to the Chaos gods, most are savvy enough to remain hidden and the sorcerers of these cults use their powers to sway political mortal leaders, amassing wealth, and causing their pawns to create conditions which foster the emotions which fuel their gods. These cults are often rivals with each other and conduct secret battles, they also have some other (supernatural?) enemies.

A common source of pests, minions and pets are fairies. Fairies are weak nature spirits with wildly varying varying intelligence, the smartest of which are as intelligent as human children.

While easy to kill, fairies essentially immortal and will reform when killed as long as the aspect of nature that they represent still exists- though with some memory loss. There is a connection to the power and intelegence of a fairy and how often it dies, though scholars argue over which is the effect and which is the cause.

Fairies tend to react to magical currents, and often cause a ruckus when magical combat causes turbulence in the local auras.

He's dubbed this power "The One Power" and it's users "Channlers". He's also named the two halves "saidin" and "saidar" respectively.

In the wake of World War Two and the UFO 'waves' of 1946-1954 the US Army Air Force started several projects to investigate cases of unidentified flying objects with Projects Sign, Grudge and Bluebook, all of their studies being determined inconclusive. What isn't public knowledge was the ongoing study by the US military into the increasing signs of extra-normal and paranormal activity which was slotted into a parallel operation solely sourced by 'Black' budget funding. This Project was known as Project Blackbook.

Originally formed by US Army and Air Force personnel in the late forties and based out of Dulce Base, New Mexico, Blackbook operatives are often mistaken for the mysterious 'Men in Black' (though they are far from the only claimants to that name) and the entire UFO angle is largely one of several misinformation campaigns directed not only at the general populace, but towards the paranormal world at large in an attempt to deceive and deny the target of their investigations the full scope and scale of Project Blackbook and its knowledge and capabilities.

While largely off the books Project Blackbook is not a rogue operation and still generally follows (far less stringent) modus operandi, laws and rules of investigation and engagement. Ever since it's inception from a military organization, Blackbook has expanded a cell like structure into many federal and state law enforcement agencies as well as in various corporations and other private concerns domestically and internationally, mostly for informant and intelligence gathering but also for more direct operations. Active Blackbook operatives are currently employed in the FBI, ATF, ICE, State Department & DSS, various Department Inspector General Offices, and US Marshal Service to help deal with domestic operations and offer a legal veneer for their investigations and operations, most centered around investigation and collation of information. However Blackbook does see itself as the first line of defense if need be against threats it still has much to learn about.

Since the 80s, one of the most common forms of magic available to civilians is the power of metal. The tradition's history is shrouded in mystery and full of legends contradictory to known history. The earliest appearance of the magical tradition project Blackbook has been able to trace are the appearances of Succoria and Riggnarok, yet even then there are unconfirmed sightings of other practitioners following them.
