OPINION EXCHANGE | Research shows progressive places, like Minneapolis, have the worst achievement gaps

Conservative cities are much better at closing the opportunity gap in education. We must demand more from our system.

The Author is the Director of a community activist training Foundation known as the Wayfinder Foundation and not a typical person who would pen such a provocative column.

After going over some of the findings, sourced from Brightbeam, a nonprofit education advocacy organization, the authors main tangible solution is that in "progressive" cities such as hers there is a lack of urgency due to the comfortable status quo and that elected officials simply aren't being held accountable.

I thought "Affirmative Action" was a thing and they also basically said all your problems are caused by white people or society and there's no real way to move up on your own and meritocracies don't exist and such?

I attended social studies classes in college, you sorta get a feel of how they see the world, and yes I'm from the Philippines, they spread over even here.

I always get a laugh about white people being the " cause" of my problems. Black people, " my people" and liberals in general said it wasn't my fault I couldn't read. It was Church going evil racist conservatives that looked at me and said " Oh no that will not do!" They were the ones that helped me actually better myself helped me learn to read and helped regain my dignity. If I had listened to the liberals....well when was the last time you saw a 49 yr old stripper.

Honestly, I feel that in a way "your people" and those liberals are beholden towards a sort of pessimism wherein there is no way up because no matter how hard you work, all of those "white people" are a bunch of mega bigots or simply put you get better via inheritance than hard work and the rich are actively keeping people from getting richer because they're cheap and stuff

I don't think welfare is completely bad, hell I don't think it's truly an encouragement to NEVER get a job because there probably isn't much you can buy with said welfare checks and living conditions won't increase by much or stop getting worse.

Perhaps the real cure is mental, you both gotta make people shake off addictions, insanity, general hopelessness, give them job opportunities, education and a belief that they can actually get better. Preferably via charity instead of government programs.

You're right that this sort of crap comes from more urban areas; Fortunately(in this case), I'm Brazilian, and the urban poor here tend to be much more conservative than you would expect from the poor in the US Eastern and Western Seaboard cities. As for the middle/upper-middle class, they're similar to the USA (especially since I work in a government-owned company). Still, things still are (somewhat) civil in the places I usually go(if only because, outside social media, people aren't that fanatic about their political preferences... yet).
