Bongo Interviews Scientist and Irexit Supporter

The Name of Love

Far Right Nutjob

Let's back up.

So there's a political party in Ireland called the Irish Freedom Party, which is, in essence, the Irish version of UKIP. Their policy goals include leaving the EU, freedom of speech, immigration control, and some moderate fiscal conservatism (e.g. less government spending and lower taxes on workers).

All in all, it supports positions that most people on this website would find uncontroversial.

Recently, the chairwoman of the party, Professor Dolores Cahill, was interviewed by 95.8 LMFM radio. My goodness was it simply infuriating.

Highlights include:
  • Asking if she's in favor of "inciting hatred."
  • Asking why free speech laws should protect "purely racist" comments, which he assumes are not true by default.
  • Asking if she considers herself a racist or a bigot.
  • Calling her a racist on the grounds that she's been called a racist by people in the media.
All within the first ten minutes at that.

What did you think of this interview? Are you about as exasperated by these bongos as I am?

I find "hate speech" to be especially perverse. It's like something out of an Orwellian Novel.

Yeah, but the fact that it preys on people’s sensibilities to avoid being called or considered or seen as a particularly atrocious type of asshole is why not enough people will openly go against it

Also because just by saying Hate Speech, instant assumptions are made even though they’re words are recorded and they are found to be factually innocent

I mean, if we're going to be banning offensive speech... well, as a Christian, there's a lot of things I find offensive, including (but not limited to):
  • Degrading or disrespecting God
  • Claiming Catholics are pedophiles
  • Gay Pride Flags
  • Pornography and other obscene things
But the definition of hate speech isn't things that are offensive. It's things they hate.
