I can understand some of their predicament. An open investigation this close to an election could change the outcome and you can imagine the outcry from people if it turned out to be a nothingburger that changed the election.

On the other hand, keeping your mouth shut and enabling a criminal to be elected President of the USA when if people had known the truth they would never have voted for him is probably worse. Then the USA gets Kamala Harris as President after Biden resigns (and gets pardoned) if that happens, its not an exageration to say that she would be the most unpopular president in history and there would be a genuine risk of civil war.

I think that they need to do something before the election, I'm just not sure whether the President is genuinely trying to spur them on to action with his timed releases or if he already knows what they are going to do and so for him its theatrical framing.

As regards the FBI I must admit to finding myself a bit confused why in four years the Trump administration hasn't supposedly brought them to heel yet, unless there is something going on behind the scenes and maybe the FBI isn't as incompetent/corrupt as it is appearing. Afterall President Trump himself has not been saying much about the FBI on this issue the last few days and both Wray and Barr have been oddly silent on the issue.

The idea of having one lab that can assist local authorities that lack the infrastructure for top notch forensics..and maybe maintaining a criminal database...and a repository of evidence...But that's about it.
