Alternate History Ideas and Discussion

Oh, OK :)
The part of the Constitution we are referring to:
Sec. 8. The Congress shall have power-
[...]
(3) To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes; but neither this, nor any other clause contained in the Constitution, shall ever be construed to delegate the power to Congress to appropriate money for any internal improvement intended to facilitate commerce; except for the purpose of furnishing lights, beacons, and buoys, and other aids to navigation upon the coasts, and the improvement of harbors and the removing of obstructions in river navigation; in all which cases such duties shall be laid on the navigation facilitated thereby as may be necessary to pay the costs and expenses thereof.

In real life, Russia is the country that has been the biggest instigator of this in the post-WWII years and decades, specifically after the Soviet collapse in 1991.

Other than the OTL Balkan irredentism? I would choose Bulgaria being a possible candidate with a 1945 PoD of Blazhe Koneski being offed. Without Koneski, the Macedonian language would not have been reformed to their OTL version that uses a mixture of Serbian letters and ones that they introduced.

Yes, other than that. I forgot about that.

Interesting. And this would make Macedonians more willing to rejoin Bulgaria after 1991?

Not sure just how likely this is, since Macedonia didn't rebel under Serbian rule between 1912 and 1915 or again in the interwar era.
Alexander II was assassinated by a member of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, Vlado Chernozemski. Moreover, there weren't that much rebellions by Macedonians against Bulgarian occupation during the war.

Interesting. Also, during which war? WWI or WWII?

Also, another AHC, but a rather gruesome one that I certainly never actually wish to happen:

'AHC: Have another group survive primarily the result of huge numbers of them successfully fleeing far, far away similar to what many of the Ashkenazi Jews in the Pale of Settlement did between 1840 and 1942 in real life, thus ensuring that they and their descendants would survive the impending Holocaust.'

2007: The start of the modern anti-vaccination movement begins here, when celebrity Jenny McCarthy claims her son became autistic because of his vaccinations. Let us imagine a slightly different timeline up to this point. You see, zombism and vampirism, among other mythical humanoid monsters, were actually caused by disease. The vaccinations for these were invented in the 1800s and subsequently the plagues of these monsters were relegated to fantasy. Ever since then though, any nation that could secretly vaccinated their children against becoming zombies, vampires or other horrible creatures.

But with the rise of the modern anti-vaxxer movement, these diseases that turn humans into monsters have returned.

In this scenario, vampire-slaying will become a public health measure since this will also mean less anti-vaxxers! :D ;)

@stevep @Zyobot @History Learner @raharris1973 @Chiron @TheRomanSlayer @Skallagrim You are a time traveller who has magically been sent back to March 4, 1881, the date of James A. Garfield's inauguration. If you can prevent Garfield from getting shot and thus save Garfield's life, you will be sent back to the present-day, either in your own (our) TL's present-day (2022) or in this TL's present-day (2022). If you fail, however, you will permanently remain stuck in 1881 and the years afterwards with progress naturally, with you certainly becoming dead by the late 20th century. You also cannot tell anyone else that you're a time traveller since they simply won't believe you and will think that you're insane.

Anyway, you have four months to prevent Garfield from getting shot by Charles Guiteau. How exactly do you go about doing this?

Find Charles J. Guiteau and take him to a backwoods area, and take him out.

More security needed, and to convince Garfield that more security service guards are needed to guard the inauguration.

How would a surviving Garfield presidency play out though?

But Guiteau didn't kill Garfield at his inauguration!

Not much from an Arthur Presidency, other than for the fact that Garfield will likely win a second term in 1884 due to him being less corrupt than Blaine was (or at least being perceived that way).

Only if I am witnessed. I will make sure its a backwater, do the deed and get far the hell away.

What exactly would get Guiteau to actually agree to this?

Also, as a side note, here's an interesting AHC: If Reagan is assassinated by Hinckley in March 1981, is there any realistic way to make the Curse of Tippecanoe extend to at least 2000?

Without a lot of research I wouldn't really know where to begin other than possibly following Chiron's approach. I might well remember the President was due to be assassinated but wouldn't know when or probably remember the assassins name.

Plus as a 62 year old with no real useful skills in 1880's US and used to my comforts and modern technology I would struggle to survive that long. Especially if simply dumped there with no preparation time or local resources to give me a chance to settle down there. For instance I would look totally out of place and without any down-time money I would have little chance of doing anything.

If somehow I succeed I would choose to return to OTL as I know what's going on, have a home, income etc. I wouldn't have any identity in an ATL 2022 nor any idea what it might be like. For all I know Britain/the wider world could be devastated by some disaster, under a brutal dictatorship or whatever.

If i was younger,i would remain in 1881.Our world is ending, why come back here ? In my case, only to die on polish land.
