Due to preparations for Qatar's 2022 World Cup.

I read a lot of shitty news daily but for some reason just chancing up in this headline felt particularly sobering and struck me.

The 6500+ dead apparently come from five South Asian countries of Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. This number was presented by the British newspaper The Guardian and compiled from government sources starting in December of 2010 when Qatar won the right to host the 2022 World Cup. This averages out to about twelve dead workers a week.

The number is likely higher because the report excludes deaths from other popular countries that supply migrant workers such as Kenya or the Philippines.

Yeah, sadly this was something a lot of people expected. Really, once it was proven that Blatter was paid off to award the World Cup to Qatar, they should have yanked it and awarded it to someone else, preferably a country that doesn’t have ongoing human rights problems.

IMO this did not need proving - awarding the event to a country the size of Qattar was proof enough.

I mean from the standpoint of "Strong enough case to be proven in a court of law." Yes, I was fairly certain Blatter was full of shit to begin with but when the proof came out and he resigned that was it.

Edit: Also, good to see you over here, @Buba

Didn't he at the time produce this ridiculous cringily hagiographic film about the history of FIFA?

It's the same in Saudi Arabia and UAE, all physical work is done by imported workers who live in semi-slavery conditions and whose lives mean nothing to their masters.
Hasn't really changed has it? Semi slavery practices.
