Ah, I see where we disagree. For me, part of the reason it is so hilarious is the fact it takes itself seriously.

Objectively speaking, it has a casual relation to the books; yes, the special effects are more like special defects, and agree on the sound track. But the end result is so campy that it's hilarious.

The 1984 is fucking awesome. Really. It's on the same level as Stallone's Judge Dredd. It should be obligatory viewing at all schools.
