Just found out since I'm apparently living under a rock that a new Dune movie is set to come out in December 2020 and started filming in March this year.

Zendaya Chani
Jason Momoa ... Duncan Idaho
Timothée Chalamet ... Paul Atreides
Rebecca Ferguson ... Lady Jessica
Josh Brolin ... Gurney Halleck
Stellan Skarsgård ... Baron Harkonnen
Dave Bautista ... Glossu 'Beast' Rabban
Oscar Isaac ... Duke Leto Atreides
Javier Bardem ... Stilgar
Charlotte Rampling ... Reverend Mother Mohiam
David Dastmalchian ... Piter De Vries
Chen Chang ... Dr. Yueh

If they can capture the feel of the Lynch version of Dune and maybe tweek some of the weirder stuff to make it more approachable for audiences then I will be a very happy man and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with this story.

Cast looks solid and while I dig Jason Momoa in general and a lot of his performances I just never saw him as a Duncan Idaho type. I get he had the curly dark hair and a general ladies man but my headcanon image of him was someone more lean and toned and clean cut like some duelist or fences stereotype... Not brawny and wild.

My only real criticism is that so far (and since I only know about the cast really in regards to this film it's not much) and I've been just as wrong on casting as I've been right on it in the past so minor criticism overall.

I really hope this is good, or at least it's lynch good, in that it will entertain me and people I know who already like Dune. The mini series a decade back was okay but ultimately I have no desire to watch it again over the Lynch movie.

I have no opinions on the casting though, I don't feel like most of the book characters, limiting ourselves to the needs of a 1 book movie and not anything that came later, are actually all that tightly defined. Many people with good direction could fill the roles.

I'm pretty hyped to see Villeneuve directing. He did Blade Runner 2049, which did a great job of preserving the atmosphere of the original, while having a considerably more interesting plot. He also did Arrival and Sicario. Hopefully we'll get something of similar high quality with this adaption.

I didn't realise he'd directed those films too. That's really promising. :)

Can't wait to see Mua'dib riding some sandworms on the big screen. :D

Not quite sure why one would want to imitate the feel of Lynch's work. You can only understand the plot of you've read the book, the addition of psychic guns made no sense (or maybe I forgot about them - been a while since I read the book), and the special effects totally and completely sucked ass. Based on the effects, one could be forgiven for thinking the movie was made in the 60's, rather than after all three original Star Wars movies (and the first three Start Trek movies, for that matter).

I've never read the books and I understood the plot just fine, the sonic guns were based on sound not psychic stuff and as a replacement for the apparent Arrakeen kung-fu from the books I liked them. There weren't battles in space in this one and I reckon both Paramount and Industrial Light and Magic would have had trouble depicting a ginormous sand worm :p The effects didn't bother me.

The aesthetic, set design, costuming and atmosphere of the movie was unique and interesting, the soundtrack was great and the universe it built up just had this great lived in feel. The movie was like nothing else before or since.

This is either going to be great cult hit or a massive flop hated by all. Either way, it's going to be a commercial flop. The current consumers don't want movies like Dune.

He would be cool as Leto though a bit typecast by now.

Will certainly be cool to see how they get so many details across in one movie. A lot will have to be truncated.

I will really miss Prochnow as Duke Leto. He was perfectly splendid in the role.

Really I think the sci fi Channel miniseries was fine. The main problem was the lower budget which lead to some obvious set problems and some reused stock footage. Much is made of the pastry chef of doom Sardauker outfits, and some of the other costumes. What you've got to remember though is that the universe of Dune is very much meant to have a feel of stagnation and decadence about it.

The Lynch film had some good casting, but Ian McNiece was far superior as the Baron Harkonnen in my honest opinion. At least as well they tried to use the Wierding way properly, as a martial art and not some screaming sound weapon. The Children of Dune miniseries sequel also was pretty good, albeit with some cast changes but it showed it had a better budget.

Yeah - where Lynch definitely excelled was the aesthetic of the Dune universe.

The Sci Fi channel version did at least seem to have functional Ornithopters, which was nice. The one thing that bugged me about the Atreides army in the Lynch movie though was that about half to three quarters of them, when Arrakeen was being attacked by the Sardauker and Harkonnen were carrying flags rather than weapons.

That's another thing, the SF Channel version showed wider Arrakeen. You had the Palace complex, the town itself, the Airstrip and so on, whereas in Lynch you had the Palace with it's shield. Mention was made of the city of Arrakeen after the attempt on the life of Paul where it's mentioned that the cit is under martial law.

A lot of people have also said the stillsuits in Lynch looked cooler. Fair dos, but they were a lot less practical. The SF channel one was sand coloured to act as camoflage, it also had a head covering which is a damned good idea to shade your head in the blazing sun. Add to that, you had the cape which is good to help hiding and for use in storms, I suspect you could link a few together to act as a makeshift tent.
