Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

Just saw a post on AH.com, mentioning a Salon article, that before Carrie Fisher signed on to become Princess Leia, Lucas was going for Jodie Foster to take the role. Foster refused, because she was already working on a Disney movie, and didn't want to break contract. The article also mention...

Stackpole's first works were in the Battletech universe, weren't they?

Rian Johnson is a better director, skill-wise, than J. J. Abrams, but the fact that TLJ was made as a 'subversion'(and by that I mean it's a big 'F U' to a really big part of the fandom) only means it's a well-polished turd - it's far more insidious than the bland(at best) TFA. As for TRoS, it...

True, the Prequels were salvageable(my biggest gripe with them is the impression Lucas seems to have squeezed 4 movies in 3 - that is, 3 movies, even big ones, were too little for the story he wanted to tell).

I think that the Sequel Trilogy's greatest crime was it made the flawed(but tolerable, even good in some points) Prequel Trilogy look good.

Agreed, but I do think he was focusing more on teenagers/young adults in the beginning(and so my friend's point still is somewhat valid). Also, TPM is rather more childish than those two mentioned - which I think is kind of the point, considering it is, in large part(with regards to Anakin), a...

Yeah, DePalma might be an intriguing possibility, but I don't have a single clue of how you might arrange that. I was talking to a friend about this alternate directors thing, and mentioned Spielberg was one of the few guys Lucas would respect enough to hear should Spielberg disagree with...

What you're telling me is Howard would be the best(though safe, 'boring', close to what we got) option, while Cameron and Spielberg would be high-risk, high-reward options, and Zemeckis would probably be the worst option.

I've just found out that Lucas approached Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Robert Zemeckis to direct The Phantom Menace, but each of the three declined, finding the project 'too daunting' and telling him to direct it himself. So, what-if time: What would be an Episode 1 directed by each of these...

Yeah, heard this yesterday. Funny enough, I think that now he would be a better fit for Anakin, as the original trilogy pictures him - the Return of the Jedi force ghost.

I've watched a few of Mike Zeroh's 'stories', and I'd say that if he tells you today is Sunday, go check in a calendar.

Biggest problem I have with the prequels is related to the fact Lucas wrote the script: to me, the story feels like it doesn't fit into three movies - it would have needed at least one other movie to make a more natural progression. As it stands, too much of what should have been told by the...

Didn't Disney troll Tolkien, saying he would buy the rights to his work and animate it?

Eh, Solo was OK(and nothing beyond that). It's not a Star Wars movie, though. As for Rian Johnson, I think he believed people in some quarters would see him as a genius if he did what he ended up doing. They probably do, but being one of the main reasons turning what had been the biggest...

If the movies had not already pushed the Han/Leia relationship, it would make sense(as much as Luke/Mara, IMO).

But she came to Tarkin's attention by beating the crap of everyone(including the Academy instructors, IIRC) in simulated battles, while hiding her identity. Tarkin was interested enough to seek out who was this budding genius, found out it was a female cadet, and through the magic of man...
