It was worth it when I went there - back before Y2K - and comparable to the out-of-state tuition for a state college. "Tuition is just a made up number meant to rob undergraduates."

My daughters don't want to go where I went. They want me to pay for community college and buy them houses instead. $60k/yr before room and board isn't worth it.

In the least expensive part of the US - rural Mississippi - a family of four needs about $41k/yr just to make ends meet.

Top 1% in the US is currently about $600k/yr or higher. Top 0.1% is $1,600k/yr or higher. Average US wage: $36k/yr and that's not enough to support a family of four anywhere in the US.

Or rather, I do know such things because I am an Engineer. I once got into a day long argument with a French-Canadian Engineer named Gabriel about the shop drawings for a set of heat exchangers. Neither of us was budging and both of us had to sign off on those shop drawings.

Not true at all. When going 55mph you need about 4 to 5 seconds and 185ft to make a car come to a complete controlled stop when you slam on the brakes and let the ABS do its job. EDIT: about a year ago a gal I knew was killed while crossing a city street with a 45mph speed limit. The guy who...

The only complaint I have with the Amish is their use of horse-drawn carriages on highways. That's really dangerous because a car going at highway speeds might not be able to slow down rapidly enough while braking heavily to avoid slamming into and wrecking both the horse-drawn carriage and the car.

The Amish also think buttons and zippers are too modern to be included when a pair of pants gets made.

This falls under the category of "Friends in High Places and Low" ... My youngest was out and about while babysitting a neice when she realized she was low on gas and didn't have her purse or phone. She said hi to a homeless guy we are very fond of* to ask him for a few bucks so she could get...

Wedding bands are always worn on the left ring finger*. Those other rings are almost never worn on that finger unless the wearer has so much bling that they need all their fingers to display it without doubling up. * unless the wearer is missing that finger, obviously.

I know that I can outclass someone just by being there. I usually keep that to myself because a liquor store clerk probably does not want to know that Rum 151 is actually rocket fuel.

I'd add their arrogance to that list as well. Those can also be a huge liability because "plays well with others" is not something one would typically use to describe someone French.

My siblings and I went to private schools that did not offer such things. The first black girl I met had braided cornrows back when we were in 1st grade. She is my wife. She was born in Oregon but spent much of her childhood in Indonesia and Jamaica. My twin sis is married to a guy who grew up...

I would say that some college education or trade school is a good thing but the idea that you need a college degree to manage a McDonald's (which a lot of managers and assistant managers do have) is taking things way too far.

Yes, you were. Nursing aside, those aren't college prep and not a high priority for educators to keep offering when the budget gets tight and things must be dropped. They're expensive to offer when compared to classes which only require textbooks, an available classroom, and a teacher.

This, to me, is a good thing. There are a lot of well-paying but unglamorous jobs which require specialized training a college education does not give you. Fr'ex: I could probably re-carpet my living room in a pinch but the end result won't be as good as hiring a professional and calling it a day.
