Even when times are bad, there are those who set their course against the prevailing winds and embrace the struggle for something better. This thread is for them.

I'll start off with a nod to the parents who sacrifice wealth and time to see their kids raised right, a group growing in number by the year.

It's never the time for violence; up until it suddenly is, and it's completely impossible to predict when that might be.

My money is that we have one last chance to turn things around peacefully in a couple years, if that fails my money is that we get full civil war in the 2060s.

There already was a civil war previous summer, your side lost. Now the country is in the vae victis phase.
2060? There won't be anyone capable fighting a civil war by then.

that was not civil war, 2020 was a shit show no doubt, but ask our south american posters, african ones, or people who grew up in the balkans, that was nothing. The populist response to the current order has just been born, were not at the ending we are at the begining and dear god it is going to suck.

Here's hoping life-extension technology matures soon enough that those responsible have to stick around to see the consequences of their actions.

After decades of pill-milling ritalin, SSRIs, oxycontin, vioxx, and only Lord knows how many others, it is easy to think that doctors have become like lawyers, accountants, and computer programmers: amoral careerists who do what money says. Media outlets with pet Dr. Talking Heads reinforce this impression, and the supplication of medical organizations such as the CDC and FDA to the interests of pharmaceutical conglomerates seems the nail in the coffin.

But there are still doctors who love life and keep their oath:

Sounds like that guy found the spiritual fulfillment that is in such short supply these days.

Really late, but personally I hope humanity never conquers death. Death comes for us all and is the one thing that the powers that be are incapable of bargaining with or avoiding. The one thing that gives me satisfaction is that these ghouls are incapable of cheating death. Delay it all they want, but the grim reaper will get his harvest of their souls sooner or later.

Who said anything about conquering death? I was talking about conquering old age. You'd still die eventually, whether it be from an accident, violence, or something else; it's just that your lifespan would be measured in centuries, perhaps even millennia, rather than decades, and the latter end of it won't be marked by your body slowly deteriorating until it falls apart on you.

Besides; there's something to be said about death being a release, rather than a punishment, and I'd prefer certain individuals not escape our reach before we can get our hands on them.

Agreed. At this rate, 2022 or thereabouts will be the deciding factor, mark my words.

you guys have been saying the same thing every couple of years since George W. Bush

What if part of the reason for me not enjoying things anymore is people constantly telling me what I should and should not do and/or be ashamed of what I'm enjoying and they won't stop meming.

I honestly don't think that the deciding factor will be this decade or the next.

We passed the point where we could nip the psycho problem in the bud by firing people in 2020, for the next 40 years we will have to put people in prison, we will have to break up major companies to get the reforms nessary to prevent everything from going tits up.

My money though is that we fail and the civil wars start in the 2060s and continue off and on for 30 years. Because we were too fucking weak to apply existing laws to bad faith actors.

Then you need to figure out why the approval of others mediates your enjoyment of a thing.

It could be that a thing you enjoy is wretched... for example, heroin. You receive pleasure from it, but others keep insisting that it's awful and they won't shut up about it. In such a case, you need to come to terms with a dependence on something that provides temporary pleasure at a cost that any rational man knows is far too high... and that your own rationality is compromised.

It could be that a thing you enjoy is harmless... for example, karaoke. You receive pleasure from it, but others bag on you for it. Perhaps because your singing sucks, or perhaps because they are scum and enjoy bagging on people, or perhaps because they are thoughtless and do not enjoy what you do, or perhaps for some other reason. In such a case, you need to segregate yourself from those who will never stop bagging on you, and find a way to make peace with the rest.

It could be a problem not with the thing or others but with yourself, a habit of expecting people to function as props, and frustration with their self-direction and failure to provide the support a prop ought to.

It could be something else.
