I've only read one Conan story in which Mitra actually plays a part, and from that he seems quite a helpful and benevolent being. What's any of this got to do with serious real-world discussion of morality though?

Without people, human morals would not exist. But humans aren't the only beings with morals. A debate of this sort tends to come down to whether or not one believes in God.

Might does not make right, might enforces right. Except when it enforces wrong. And plenty of people seem to think that the ability to enforce your opinion of things with might means that your opinions have something going for them. It's known as the argumentum ad baculum.
