Hmm I think you're underestimating team Fallout their armor can work in a vaccum so they'd be able to do the space sections too annnnnd their armor should be resistant to Deathclaw slashing/smashing as we see here. And not enough main character shields? You have Horrigan AND the Sole Survivor...

TBF all the factions have dealt with monsters The Enclaves would have dealt with mutants and I think the Clone Troopers dealt with Genosian Zombies so they all have some lvl of XP.
