Oh, certainly some trade routes will be protected, specifically the ones directly beneficial to them. But I have no confidence that the US's eventual successor (however long it takes for there to be one) will just protect everyone's trade the way that we have.

That presumes that the mindset and culture of whatever hegemon comes next will care enough about global trade to see it as worth safeguarding. And that the balance of power is sufficiently lopsided it can be done by a single nation.
