A nation is ethnically, culturally, and religiously homogenous. America as a nation was destroyed when Boomers believed the government when it told them that America was a "nation of immigrants" or a "propositional nation". Then anyone, anywhere could be an "American" and American lost all meaning. A people can't rally around an empty identity.
That's why they "rally" around identity politics. Any excuse to be a member of some oppressed tribe gives them a reason to live. Color, creed, sexual orientation, that's all fair game to belong to some "oppressed" subgroup that becomes their new identity. And they just form cardboard cutouts of the stereotypes and pretend to be happy, while reeeing away... Marxist knew this, this is on purpose. Destroy national identity, divide and conquer with victim clans.
In all polities within this Overton Window, "conservative" just means "Liberalism according to which decade I prefer". To be truly Conservative would be best described as Traditionalist or Reactionary
