"BEEP!"
Ok ultimatly I think this is going to be a different thesis than what is presented in the title. The reason why most people like underdogs at least in theory is that we want them to essentially earn their success, we want them to get dragged through the mud so that the happy ending can be more satisfying, essentially we want them to burn in Hell for a while so that entering Heaven can be that much sweeter.
The problem is that There is no ending, at no point can we ever see a character retire. They have to keep making new stories, if no new stories can be made, then we'll recycle the old stories sometimes line for line, which means that most characters have to go through this cycle of self-hating angst over and over and over again. How many times can Peter Parker whine about how X situation is his fault to the point we grit our teeth when we hear the line "With great power comes great responsibility?" Edit: how many times do we have to go over the death of Gwen Stacy or see Peter chase an illusive red head the writer have made clear he's NEVER going to be with.
It's gotten to the point when batman starts brooding about his life, I don't care about his personal struggles or whether being batman is tearing him apart. If anything I want him to either get over it, or put himself out of his misery so we can finally put the same old tired story to bed. If bruce wayne is dead, then at least have the dencency to bury him next to his parents so that at least Alfred can move on with his life. Yes I am aware that being human means we make the same mistakes over and over again alot of times, that doesin't mean it's a good thing or it's somthing I want to aspire to. Reality is boring and gritty and tiring, in other news water is wet, I don't want to see that in my fiction. It's one thing to make charecters earn a happy ending....but at some point there has to at least be an ending.
