Moving South, anything I should know?

Also, will anyone care about me being openly gay (really bi)? I've been warned about that by people in the North, but whenever I've interacted with Southerners and Republicans I've had no issue. I'm very doubtful it would matter, but I'd figure I'd check just in case. I'm not one of the people that drop it in every conversation (it just comes up more often on this board because we talk about politics a lot).
Honestly no. At most you might get a curled lip or two. Though it depends on where you are. If your in an urban or suburban area people will probably say nothing. In a rural area, would really depend. But no you don't have anything to worry about it.

We may be more conservative, but our conservativism is tempered by our politeness.

Yeah, most Northerners buy into the Hollywood propaganda that living down south makes you some racist, hick hillbilly who hunger for the blood of black and brown children or something. Its totally ridiculous.
Tell me about it. When is was deployed overseas and I told the locals about where I was from. They thought my entire life must have been a skit from Hee Haw.

Pretty much what everyone on the thread here has already said. I reside in North Carolina, so I'll offer what I can.

Just be patient and polite with everyone, that's all. Sure, you're gonna find some "redneck assholes", but I could easily say the same for some Northern equivalents, especially up in the Northeast around Jersey, based on my experience there. But those aren't the majority, so don't freak about it. Like anywhere else you go, be polite, but keep your head on a swivel, so to speak.

And for god's sake DO NOT condescend or act like you're condescending or be rude to any Southerners, especially if they pick up your Bostonian accent. They pick up on that and will get royally pissed. They're very aware of how much a lot of people up North look down their noses at them, especially as of late.

You haven't had sweet tea until you've had Southern sweet tea. 😮 Just a couple cups of that stuff will have you begging for an insulin shot. But again, it's all about moderation, just like anything else. So don't be afraid to explore southern culinary dishes. But yes, they fry a lot of stuff down here. But lots of BBQ too, and EVERYONE will always bicker about who makes the best.

The summers can make you feel like a dog, but you get used to it, it's an acclimation process. Just stay hydrated and go easy when it's hot, limit your direct sun exposure. And yeah, the thunderstorms can be something fierce, keep your umbrella handy!

Definitely loads of 2A enthusiasts down here, myself included. 😁 But be aware the gun stores down here are struggling just to keep the shelves stocked like everywhere else right now as everything is flying off of them, the gunmakers and ammo factories can barely keep up with the demand.

Learn to appreciate history, there's plenty to be seen in the South, and keep an open mind. Yeah, the Civil War was ugly and the Confederacy lost, it had to and was going to. But many still harbor some strong feelings about that. Just don't try to pick fights, listen to what everyone has to say.

I'll add more if anything comes to mind. But ask away if there's anything else you're curious about.

Oh for god's sake I've heard enough of that condescending BS it's almost enough to make me exercise my 2A rights in an especially violent manner. I stress ALMOST.

And the funny thing is I'm originally a Northerner myself from the Wisconsin/Minnesota area, albeit I was a military brat that traveled often when I was a kid/teenager.

One other thing to watch out for in the south is the cuisine. Not because it's bad, it's delicious and Southern Home Cooking is some of the best on the continent. However southern cuisine is designed around the base assumption that you're about to go out and till the fields for the next twelve hours and it's calorie and salt content are calculated at that level. Since you're probably not doing that, well, you're going to see a really lot of really far people who eat like a southerner but don't work much, and maybe don't want to look like them. If you want to remain fit keep a wary eye on the food portions and be careful.

Mostly, the point of this thread is I don't want to come off as that entitled Northerner asshole when I move down South, and I don't want to be one of the ones turning the south blue either. I figure it's up to me to adapt mostly to where I'm moving to, rather than the other way around.
My experience is being a skinny-ass twink with a pixie cut in Kentucky and West Virginia, and a huskier guy in Tennessee. Southern guys can be hella cute.

As long as you’re not a dick about it, or engaging in ridiculous PDA, most people will not care. Dating pool will be more limited than Boston by sheer population size, and scene/bar gay guys may be more stereotypical than in Boston. You also may run into more closeted guys, especially older ones. Not because people care, but because people think people care.

Huntsville is reasonably cosmopolitan, and Birmingham is huge. Going there to socialize will require planning but is doable. If you’re used to gayborhoods and lots of gay bars as your social scene, you will need to adjust. But they do exist, are popular, and safe.

Also, sports are a big thing, especially football. You will need to assume a partiality, and respect that of your hosts and friends. Don’t call it sportsball.

Very good point. I mean, I wasn't going to do it anyway, but I'll make sure to avoid it.

I'm a huge Pats fan, so that's not an issue!

just remember most people will be ok, but that the mosquettos are god awful.

Buy repellent.
Good point.

I wouldn't be too open about that. A lot of people won't care, but a lot of people will care.
Eh, talking about football is a fun time, even if we rag on each other's team. There isn't really a state professional team in Alabama, so I should be fine.

This is maybe somewhat true, which means you should make sure to become a familiar at least a bit with college football, as Alabama is VERY invested into that especially via rivalry between University of Alabama's football team and Auburn University's team.

However, general regionalism still colors people's professional football loyalties. As such, while they might not have their own specifically local team, the Patriots, being the most explicitly yankee team in the league, will likely get a lot of heat. However, you probably won't face the level of vitriol that a proper league rivalry generates, like admitting to being a Cowboys fan in the DC metro area.

Alabama, or Auburn for those who hate Alabama :p
Fair, but given Saban was an assistant coach for Belichick, I think I'll get on fine with supporting Alabama.

Basically what I expect. A little heat is fine to make jokes off of.

Sweet! Any local food you'd recommend, especially in regards to Pizza, Burgers, and Fried Chicken?

I also got told by the person hiring me that Huntsville was a liberal(er) place (She knew I was from Massachusetts, so I bet she was trying not to scare me off). Is there any truth to that?

Any good Sports bars?

Also, how bikeable is it? I didn't bother getting a license, because I lived in MA (now I'm probably going to get one), but a car is expensive as well. I know there are some bike paths to my workplaces, but what about the rest?

Also, do you know anything about local nerd groups/gaming shops? I'd like to get a head start looking for a D&D group or something similar.

Finally, and specifics about the area I might have missed that you'd like to mention?

Nothing comes to mind at the moment in regards to Pizza and Burgers at the moment. (Keep in mind that I don't live in Huntsville but rather a distance away so I only visit their once every other month, so I don't know everything their is to offer of the top of my head.) but if your interested in or authentic Cajun food in general the Po Boy Factory is a pretty great restaurant that is a must try in the food category.

The City is conservative mostly thanks to it's mayor Tommy Battle whom has done a remarkably good job by the city adding over 9,000 jobs (according to numbers he released) during his second term in office.

Understand Huntsville has always been a spot of major economic activities for awhile the city boast Redstone arsenal a branch of both Boeing and Northrop Grumman, since Battles has taken office a branch of Polaris as well as two lines of Remington arms has also moved in. (Remington because laws passed up north made the production of specific weapon illegal)

So it's not that the city is more liberal it's just that people their are mostly center conservatives of a more open mindset than most others and coupled with the cities income being so well only helps this atmosphere.
Any good Sports bars?
You might as well be asking if politicians are liar's the state lives in sports bars in Huntsville in particular, Alabama and Auburn games are played constantly along with NASCAR and Baseball/Basketball. Heck last election I remember a conservative bar owner allowing people to come watch the election at his bar and that was pretty common.

Bottom line if you go to a sportsbar and find you don't like it, their are at least thirty more to chose from.
Also, how bikeable is it? I didn't bother getting a license, because I lived in MA (now I'm probably going to get one), but a car is expensive as well. I know there are some bike paths to my workplaces, but what about the rest?
What do you mean by license? Car or Bike? and by bike to you mean like a motorcycle or a Bicycles?

I will assume you are talking about Bicycle's at least as far a biking goes and say the city is pretty bikeable as you can see here. Homepage - Bike Huntsville | See and Be Seen

Their are greenways and downtown is as bike friendly as you can get, but keep in mind that the city while prosperous is pretty big and you will need to learn your way around it as the city does have a bad spot here and their that you wouldn't want to be anywere near without a gasoline power vehicle.

Unlike most cities I have been to Huntsville is sprawling and the interstate seems to loop around itself a lot so it can take some getting used to.

One last thing I will point out is that if you bike, take a lot of cold water in the summer, and I mean a lot, fill the bottle with ice or keep it in a cooler, in this part of the South one hundred degrees is common in the summer especially when you are on concrete and furthermore the sun is beating down on you in a good day, the worst type of a summer day in the south is when the sky is grey and it has recently rained recently trust me humidity is the worst.

So bottom line is carry water.
Also, do you know anything about local nerd groups/gaming shops? I'd like to get a head start looking for a D&D group or something similar.
The Deep comes to mind, their are also gamestops and a few other game stores that do similar stuff for various groups and every once in a while a convention will be held at Von Braun center and not small ones either they can get huge!

I can't name any groups off the top of my head at the moment though.
Finally, and specifics about the area I might have missed that you'd like to mention?
If you ever get the chance to go to the space and rocket center do so, if not well a quick drive by on the interstate will give you a look at the Blackbird, A Saturn rocket and of course the space shuttle.

As for interactions with people keep a few things in mind.
  1. Be humble, to a Southern person their is nothing that will earn their respect quicker than admitting your own flaws and doing right by other's as well as being friendly.
  2. Keep in mind people might joke around about your accent but remember that people do that in workplaces and you are a person coming into their lives a Southern who heads to New England would likely face the same difficulties.
  3. If you see someone flying a Confederate Flag don't assume the worst of them immediately, and try to ascertain if they are good people first as not everybody who uses it can be labeled as bad. (I know you know this just a friendly reminder.)
  4. Understand that until you have been here two-four years you are going to be seen as a outsider until then by some so keep that in mind.
But if you keep all that in mind you will be okay.

Make that 9,001 with me, making it...

Yeah, I was talking about bicycles. Thanks, this is really useful.

This is really great news. I'm going to be following two NFL teams this year (the Pats, obviously, and the Pat's Expansion team in Tompa Bay), and probably adding Alabama football to that, and I also want a place to watch the Stanley Cup.

This place sounds great, I'll have to check them out!

I am from GA, so not much diffrent from Bama, but diffrent enough from those Cousin marrying Bamaians/s
Jokes aside, the south is not that diffrent from the North, if you leave cities, dont expect grid system type roads. They often dont connect to a road that leads back. Some places sure, but not many.

Food is good, Cornbread and Sweet tea are everywhere. I recommend buying or making your own sweet tea at first to adjust.

Guns are loved, as are Nascar, well perhaps no more on that, as well as Football.

Dont worry about being Gay or Bi, you will meet plenty oddly enough. Just dont go around bragging and be careful of who you hit on.

OH! Dont mind the term Yankee, especially if you have an accenmt. You will be asked about it alot, and dont pay attention to southern accents.

I was raised in GA and born in Ohio.

I am from GA, and do the people there Auburn doesnt exist. Only GA and AL. I personally am a Buckeyes fan. I was born in Ohio though so.
