Most things are a pack of cigarettes for instance cost I hear cost nine plus dollars in New York, here it's four.
That's mostly because of sin taxes, though. I'm surprised that furniture is cheaper in the south, but that sounds convenient.

Don't think I am promoting smoking I am not I don't smoke it's just a reference.

A cheap loaf of bread is about a dollar Milk is between three and four dollars a gallon. (The higher end brand is Mayfield.)Eggs are 1.75 a dozen if not less and soft drinks are about a one-two dollars a two litre.

Car insurance is anywhere from 90-130 dollars a month. (Not full coverage)

And a good used car or truck with medium miles (160,000/200,000) can be bought for roughly 1,000 to 3,000 dollars although if you want to buy a beater car for under a 1000 you can and might luck out with a good vehicle.

Also, be advised. The Roads in Alabama are complete shit. Sad to say they're just as bad if not worse in South Carolina. Only Georgia seems to be able to have nice roads they don't have to repave every 2 or 3 years. So make sure your shocks are good on your car and try to avoid potholes. Because the Potholes are likely much bigger than they look.

In the city itself it shouldn't be a problem as Huntsville is pretty wealthy but the county roads can get pretty bad especially if they are in dirt poor counties.

Oh yeah, that reminds me... do not drive at night in Alabama outside of the city until you have a few months of night driving experience under your belt.

You will also need a GPS, because if you want to go from Huntsville to any other city, you will wind up driving hours on a road going through hilly terrain, with few signs and few towns in between.

And the roads arnt on a grid system outside the city I am guessing?

So I'm moving from Boston to the South for work, specifically to Huntsville Alabama. Is there anything I should know about there, and ways to behave and mostly fit in?

As a northern who travels to that neck of the woods for business regularly... Talk to people. Take the time to talk to people. And saying "Sir" and "Ma'am" and "please" and "thank you" more never hurt, and will get you an immediate positive response. These simple things will let you fit in very well no matter who you are.

Oh, and get with the lingo for ordering your hashbrowns at Waffle House, and consider trying out Community Coffee instead of whatever brand you use right now. It's good, and honest.

That's about it really. You're not a southerner, but if you're a polite Northerner and can slow down a little for the conversations, you'll get along fine with everyone.

What exactly does this mean? I don't want to be nosy, but is being nosy polite in the South?
Generally speaking I found people wanted to chat. So whereas when I lived up north people generally wanted you to do your business and go, down south they're more likely to want to have a few minutes of "Hi, nice weather, how's the wife, did you see [crazy thing in the news]?" first. I don't mean you should be nosy and putting your face in other people's business for sure, but things like asking how the rest of the family is doing are basic social niceties when up north that would be considered a rude invasion of privacy.

A lot of them conform to the terrain once you get out of the city. It's great if you're in a sports car and want to have a thrilling ride, but for a novice driver, it's super scary, especially at night.

Nowhere near as bad as driving up a hill at a nearly 45 degree angle in rural Puerto Rico, but close.

To say nothing of the fact that northern Alabama is deer alley and they love to jump in front of cars, I am dead serious, I have seen deer cross a road and be in the clear and then turn around a walk directly into a incoming vehicle so watch out for them especially in wooded areas.

That's because God put deer on this Earth for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is for us Humans to turn them into delicious summer sausage. And on a instinctual level, the deer realize this. They know it, deep in their souls. But they don't understand what summer sausage is. The closest they can get is shredded meat with a bit of vegetation mixed in.

Every once in a while, inspiration strikes. A deer has a vision of a pile of ground meat. 'Yes,' it says to itself. 'That's it! I know what I must do!' and in a fit of euphoria, it throws itself in front of a truck.

Damned things. The only defense is to drive slow and thin them out in the hunting season.

Yeah, I plan on getting a car, but in the meantime, I've got an apartment near where I work (like a mile out) and I plan on biking there. Getting a gun is a priority, and I have quickly realized that a car is a major help with that.

As for cars, I probably want a pickup. Any estimations on cost?
Unless you are extremely fit, you probably want to reconsider this.

Biking a mile in an Alabama summer will have you ridiculously sweaty and smelly wherever you go. When I say ridiculously sweaty, I mean it - worse than the most energetic gym session crossed with the most ardent fuck you’ve ever had, if you had done them in a summer attic without air conditioning. Biking in the rain will leave you a soggy, cold mess. There is nothing worse than a mile bike or walk in cold rain. Unless you have access to a shower at work, most days you will be absolutely miserable, and embarrassed to boot.

Buy a car ASAP. Drive anywhere you want to look halfway decent.

Pickups have their uses, but a sedan or coupe is just fine. Most of the reasons to get a pickup don’t matter for apartment living, and cars are a hell of a lot easier to park.

I don't have a license, so needs must. I could also walk (it is under a mile). Regardless, I'm working on getting the license.

Expedite.

Honestly, walking will leave you less gross than biking. But there is a reason Southerners are languid. The humidity is a killer, and exertion is like taking a shower in your clothes. Move slowly.

A brisk walk when it’s 105 and 30% humidity is a lot less miserable than one when it’s 85 and 60%. Done both.

As an adult you probably don't need to actually take the course even in Mass. See if that's true and just test out of the written test, get your learner's permit ASAP, and find a friend to have you circle a parking lot, then a suburban street, and then get on the interstate... A few days of practice and you will be fine for passing the test. This should totally be doable within a couple weeks, max. And you want it done before you move.
