As for Asari themselves when they mate with each other they have recessive traits that can make them give birth to basically vampires. Thus they see it as bad and incest. So they prefer other species. And Asari unions like incest are only really acceptable if there is no other choice for propagation of the species. After all a chance of creating Joffrey should not be taken if there are other safer better alternatives.
Homospecieal relations between Asari are abnormal to the point of threatening genetic disease. There are also no other sapient species known to be native to their planet. We have no confirmation that their mating process discriminates by sapience.

The Protheans made their species as a final fuck you to the Reapers. They live until something kills them, they're capable of breeding as quickly as humans and reproducing a viable population from only one individual and anything with a nervous system, they're all biotics, their reproductive cycle involves mind-melds so they can spread education and skills as STDs and they were given a complete repository of Prothean technologies and knowledge about the Reapers right at the start of their civilization.
The protheans programmed their Beacons with warnings about the reapers and the Crucible's design specifications and left one of them in the hands of the asari, expecting an asari galactic empire devoted to total war production, including a "win everything" superweapon at the center of the entire asari imperial army, the primary target for the entire reaper armada. It's what they would have done. When first playing the games, I thought we were getting set up for this all along. All the evidence was there. Javik's personality, the prothean inability to understand that other civilizations might not think like they did, that Mass Relays explode with supernova-equivalent force when destroyed, the Citadel being a disguised giant Mass Relay, the fact that nobody left alive actually knew what the Crucible did, just that it had to be linked to the Citadel and how to assemble the Crucible as a technological blackbox from design specifications in the Beacons, etc.
The Crucible is bait. Provide a tempting target, hook it to a solar system sized bomb, then detonate it, massacring the reapers and the largest, most powerful army besides them in the galaxy. Then, in the aftermath of their enemies and puppets wiping each other out, the frozen protheans on Ilos defrost and are virtually unopposed in reestablishing their empire. If there were still
some asari around, they had
a killswitch buried in their DNA, hidden aside from sometimes when inbreeding caused it to express.
The protheans couldn't have just built it themselves because all it would take would be one indoctrinated quisling who knew the plan to spoil it, while if nobody actually knew what they were building, they couldn't be brainwashed into revealing it.
