Read up on the Russian Provisional Government again ... so sad. A genuine flowering of democracy in an autocratic state that was ruthlessly destroyed by totalitarians, who then pretended to be the ones who had overthrown the autocracy in question.

Worst thing is, how many people even remember or think of them? Also, doubt Lenin was such a nice guy

The Autocracy had ended in 1905. The Provisional Governor was an author of dysfunctional chaos, with idiotic leadership that destroyed the Russian war effort and nation by such ridiculous things as allowing soldiers to vote on obedience to orders. It was socialist to the core and implemented a comedy society in which there was no civic order, no ability to direct the nation in the war, in which millions of troops were duped into disobeying their officers and then slaughtered like lambs by the Nemetsky. The Kerensky government was doomed from the start by its own socialist conceits and in halting the natural progress of the Russian nation under the Romanovs made possible the Bolshevik tyranny. It is not a mistake that the White Movement rallied around the Romanovs as the martyrs of the Russian nation rather than around the Provisional Government; six months of it was enough to leave the ideas it proposed to expound revealed as a bankrupt joke to the whole world for all time.

I thought it was them exceeding their environment's carrying capacity among other things. I remember them being listed as an example of a culture that collapsed by screwing up the environment sustaining them, alongside Easter Island. You do know that one right?

We have increasing evidence that massive, internicine self-destructive warfare drived the collapse of the Classical Mayan City State order, and it was in fact primarily driven by Teotihuacan's colonial machinations as represented in the form of the Vizier "Fire-is-Born" who overthrew and dominated governments at the behest of a Teotihuacano army during a major invasion that initiated a century of brutal, totally destructive warfare. Now that we can read Mayan, a lot of the old pacifistic/environmentally dominant theories have fallen away.

I stand corrected in regards to the Provisional Government.

It's okay, it's easy to want them to be the beginning of an America-like Russia, but if you study the details of the government, it's a comedy of socialists in power doing what they actually say they were going to do. Give Kerensky some credit though, he largely kept his promises and his word ... He ended up a University Professor in the United States when he fled, which was really about the role you'd expect from him, imagine a liberal college professor in power. It was a farce that enabled millions of deaths.

Nicer than Stalin. Though Trotsky was too, and look what it got him. Some fine gentleman went to axe him a question...

Well, I think you are forgetting the Whites were a diverse movement, so anger at the murder of the Romanovs probably was all they had in common. Even the ardent democrats probably weren't pleased by it, given that it was pointless brutality. And I find it amusing that you absolve the Tsarist regime of its role in starting this mess in the first place. To me it just seems like your own bias is leaking through, though everyone is biased about something. All I see is a corrupt and ineffectual regime, replaced by another. And then that is replaced by a much crueler and inhuman regime.

I stand corrected in regards to the Provisional Government.

Remember who is talking, she is going to give a biased account on this matter, though just about anyone is going to give an account that is biased in one way or another. You should read for yourself instead of taking what anyone says on the internet as truth. Do as Brian says.

Full disclosure: @Hlaalu Agent is correct, I have family ties to the White Movement.

I am pretty sure, that our opinions about this are not that far apart. Except that you are much more inclined towards the Romanovs, while I am slightly more forgiving of the Russian democrats myself. Though I think I might be more pro-cadet. However, I will admit, I am a bit of a Kolchak fanboy. A bit.

Whether he was a really nice guy or not, if he’s not a “strongman” in a government or nation where murder for power is regular or “revolutions” occur

Then he’d probably have been killed by someone seeing him as too “weak” or milquetoast with dealing with enemies

I wouldn't doubt that he would. And I was only speaking comparatively. Nice than Stalin is a very low bar to clear.

Yeah, though I doubt many people even know how “nice” Lenin actually was

Even with history or lists of events uncensored and unchanged, plenty of people don’t really read or know history, even recent history

From what I remember, Lenin was actually quite a dick in his personal life. And the reason he was pushed down the path of his life, was the death of his terrorist brother.

They weren't male strippers for gods sake!
You'll tear my image of Leonidas and Co. as ripped, oily, bare-chested men in capes and speedos from my weak, vapours-suffering arms! :p

For another myth--That of German 'invincibility' or even military superiority in the first years of WWII. The Wehrmacht won against Czechoslovakia thanks to the fact it was barely 20-year old Czechoslovakia and every defensive position the Benes government had was gobbled up thanks to Munich, and they won against Poland because it was Poland and the Poles forward-deployed along an entire border--something which might've helped if their allies had done jack-diddly shit to help them (oh yeah, and then Uncle Joe kicked in the back door). Then a large part of the victory in France was wrapped up in French leadership (both political and military) being incompetent, older than crap and literally slow (I forget who, but I recall hearing of one French commander who refused to use radio), or set against each other just as or even more-so than they were the Germans. Seriously, French leadership and society in 1939-40 is like some kind of...terrible, Monty Python-esque stereotype of lazy, incompetent, scheming Frenchmen given life as actual Frenchmen.

@prinCZess I remain convinced 300 would have been an epic success if it had been marketed appropriately to women.

As for the matter of the French, there were... Structural factors, more than what you describe. The French Army was set up to conduct a war-winning 1918 offensive.

And this propaganda continues to get pushed by the sympathetic scum in universities and political parties.
