That’s my take. It seems like (assuming a Trump loss) this is less a rejection of conservatism or embrace of liberalism and more, to quote a certain presidential candidate, “Will you shut up, man?!” to Trump personally. Which, yeah, given that people like his policies overall (generally speaking) more than they like him, is entirely reasonable.
If the GOP holds the Senate as expected, then Biden (really, Harris) can still do some damage, but they can’t do truly outrageous stuff like pack SCOTUS or add new states. And while 2022 might be favorable to Democrats in the Senate, mid-terms are usually bad for the incumbent party. Oh, and one thing that’s not getting much press is that Republicans actually made gains in the House. Not enough to flip it, but enough to put them over the 200 mark.
I’m interested to see how this goes, but this sure as shit isn’t the “mandate” a lot of Democrats were hoping for. Rather, it’s a “Will you assholes knock this shit off and just leave the rest of the country alone and in peace?”
