Unreachable city in the sky

So on August 20, 2020 something appears worldwide.

A green city appears about the clouds, but not in clear skies.

It is confirmed not to be an illusion or hoax.

The city can not be reached by planes, helicopters, or drones, or even spacecraft. Anyone approaching in the sky will see the city, move farther away out of reach. Satellites can see it, but it can not be reached from space.

Occasionally lights are seen from the emerald buildings and telescopes observe beings of tremendous beauty and grace walking in its street of sapphire and purest gold. They have hair that is whiter than snow, and faces that are like the sun, and eyes that are globes of white light, and bodies that shimmer of crystal, golden white, and darkest black in perfect harmony. If one of these beings looks into the telescope, the person seeing through will experience either a sense of awe bordering on the divine itself, drop dead, or simply...disappear.

Any attempt at communication is unresponded to.

How does this affect world culture and science?

Politics?

Will their be cargo cults, or attempts to study them?
 
I can see cults starting to form around that city, especially if one survivor of their gaze tries to describe them. They might even end up filling a spiritual need that has been negleted under the pretense of "We are civilized people, we don't need religion!"
I mean, an "awe bordering on the divine itself"? They drop dead or disappear as the other possibilities? Definitely something people would look into.
 
The fascinating thing is that they are basically the divine desired but they can’t be reached or grasped.

Some of those who see them vanish-which will lead to the hope they have been “taken up”.

I do think though it would change people and society-because it’s there always, our hands reaching never to touch.

There'll always be people trying to reach that place, by any means necessary. There was that one guy who scammed flat earthners into financing his rocket. Wouldn't be surprised if they did that with the purpose of landing on the ship.
 
I can see a lot of home made rockets with the attempt to get there. People performing rituals including sacrifice to gain the favor of the beings in the sky.

And a lot of people going to the clouds, only to grasp empty hair before dropping back down to die.

The spiritual consequences would be...fascinating.
 
Imagine three (or more) VTOL aircraft in a triangle (n-gon) formation going directly up so that the city is surrounded. It can't get further away without getting nearer to any of them. What will happen to the city?

It will vanish, and then appear across from them.
 
Would it? People looking at it will occasionally die or disappear. That’s going to ensure it stays in public consciousness.
