The Great Ginger Genocide

So this showed up in my Twitter feed...

Now... I have nothing against Hannah John-Kamen. She did a fine job as Ghost in Antman & the Wasp and she did a fine job in one of the more liked episodes of mine Black Mirror, and did a fine job in Ready Player One. She's got great eyes, super striking and is clearly a physical enough actress for the role but c'mon... at least dye her hair red for fucks sake.

Also... Hannah John-Kamen is portraying Jill Valentine in the upcoming Resident Evil movie which I have less of a problem compared to this role because one of Jill Valentine's notable traits... is those eyes!

But still, this is an ongoing issue. Gingercide and Gingerphobia is apparently a thing and it's such a strong trend that we have perpeutal haters on such reputable periodicals like The Mary Sue throwing up lists of red headed characters they want to be replaced by Stacy Abrams lookalikes or whatever.

In fact it's such an issue... why not make a thread about it? Before all redheads are simply a memory (in Hollywood at least).

Anyways, Bounding Into Comics has a chronicle... as of December of 2020, of all of the Gingers and Redheads who have been swept away by Hollywood Racebenders (which is a term I didn't think I'd ever use :p ).

Also in video format:

In the name of absolute fairness Imma point out that old-school comics have a staggeringly large number of redheads compared to the actual population. This was because using the print technology of the time, there were some sharp limits on how many colors of realistic hair they could actually produce so they tended to make their characters blonde, brunette, and redhead in about even proportions, since hair is the easiest way to distinguish characters in that format. The original Hulk had grey skin but they had trouble getting the inks to balance so they made him green, for similar reasons.

Considering the fact that hair dye is a thing that exists, I don't think that matters. Also, it's a huge leap to go from "there aren't that many redheads in real life" to "all redheads must be portrayed by black people".

I don't think that this recasting is really targeted at gingers specifically, but rather just Hollywood's usual schtick of not caring about the source material they are adapting. Really, the studios only use the licenses to source material like books or comics and such because that material has brand name recognition. Hollywood puts their scriptwriters on the "adaptation project" and the writers don't really care about adapting the source material faithfully; they just want to do their own thing. And when it comes to casting, it's never about being faithful to the source material. It's about casting who is going to be profitable (ie Scarlet Johansson as the Major in Ghost in the Shell), and who is still popular within the cult of Hollywood.

A few years ago I would of believed the idea it was just Hollywood not caring about the source material. But considering arguments I've heard in the past few years make me think it is intentional. If not the hair itself, its because that red heads tend to be the palest of the pale in skin tone. And too many people in entertainment do make disturbing statements about race nowadays. Like how the director of Mortal Kombat didn't want Cage to be the lead because he was a white character. Or how Mark from Invincible is now half-asian and Rickman went on a interview that sounded pretty close to almost guilt for making a story the way he did as him and the artist being "two white guys".

There is definatly an ideology at work in these places. Even if someone agreed with it it still needs to be recognized as such.

I haven't watched the video yet, or even read the video title due to how outraged and triggered I already am but it looks like another Ginger has been genocided. It's a guy though so people won't care as much (rightly so). :sneaky:
