In-Universe, part of the problem the Night’s Watch has is that it couldn’t develop both the old and New Gift which were left mostly uninhabited and undeveloped
Sorta making it an increasing problem due to Wildling raiders coming in
So what if, instead, The Gift was essentially just a “frontier” of lands with old and new houses taking over and making their small castles for many centuries
Yes, it will probably make Northern politics more complex due to the increase of Houses and relatives and even increase the population and amount of crops produced
But point is, the North would be more defended and The Watch will probably get regular donations of resources to survive
