On Tuesday, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was arrested by Pakistani authorities in a case filed by Pakistan's anti-corruption authorities but that his supporters call "an abduction." It's alleged that Khan is facing over a 100 corruption cases (which is pretty typical for Pakistani PM's IMHO ngl) but has avoided arrest due to the strength of his followers resisting any attempts by security officials to apprehend him until now.
This arrest has sparked protests all across Pakistan, with at least eight people so far killed and over 1600 people arrested. Reportedly almost 150 police officers have also been wounded. The military has been called out in several provinces to help quell the situation. Back in 2018 Imran Khan had the support of the military but as of late, has become a vocal critic of the Pakistani military establishment.
Last Spring (March-April 2022) Imran Khan was removed from office in a vote of no confidence after he released secret US Diplomatic Cables in violation of state secret regulations (among other reasons as well) thus sparking a Constitutional Crisis which resulted in protests as Khan himself was the first Prime Minister to be removed in such a fashion after Khan unsuccessfully attempted to dissolve the legislative assembly.
Since then Imran Khan has led long marches in protest of his removal and to compel early elections. He also survived an assassination attempt in November of 2022 where he was shot in the leg.
